    A fuel tank near the battery and the oxygen bottle???? Could you tell me more? I think you may be onto something.

    2. Yes: partial electrical failure (leak + battery) then fire then catastrophic mechanical failure (I don’t want to speculate too much but I have in mind that the pilots might have died or being ejected)
    3. Transponder 1 is in the cockpit. Transponder 2 might not have been reachable for crew stuck in the cabin (cockpit closed for security reasons)
    4. If Structural damage was on the frwd section only, the others system might have operated “normally” and AP keep the plane flyable until… (left blank : horrible thought)
    5. Cockpit only.

    I fear that the loss of that 777 might have been an horrific agonizing experience for all those involved (passengers and else)

    As a side note, I was astonished by the place where they ran the test for teh video. Notice on the printscreen the open road and the cars passing just in front!

    Some interesting facts outsourced from that article:

    regarding the propulsive effect:
    Years ago I had to design an “Ice gun” (dry ice). At that time I had to check that the recoil effect was not like what we see in Hollywood. It was not. But I would have to check for the exact type of bottle here.

    The only thing I see as plausible in the scenario above is that the cockpit sustained a fire during enough time to “cook-up” the bottle (there is a battery and a fuel tank nearby). However it does not fit with the loss of of the transponder unless you imagin a general shortcut (fuel leak?).

    Anyhow. What have been said by the poster does not fit the bill of a basic check (10 secondes via google)

    Why? T-50 already has that. The reason Su-34 will continue to be desirable after T-50 enters service is because it can haul a truckload of stuff and there are a variety of missions for which VLO isn’t particularly advantageous (including the Growler role I alluded to earlier). Limiting payload capacity and flexibility via an internal weapons bay would be a step backwards, or at least an expensive step sideways.

    Same reason I always thought F-15SE was a fool’s errand, incidentally. Or at least the IWB’s that were the centrepiece of the proposal: “let’s take an aircraft whose chief distinguishing characteristics are range and payload and take away range and payload.”

    I do agree with your analysis :
    – the 34 as an heavy “Omnirole” for low to med intensity conflict
    – A secondary strike/SEAD assets for near-pear conflict in the stealth ages

    However, where did you heard that the SE would have had less range and less payload?
    Internal payload had to b restricted in Stealth mode. But such is for all stealth fighters.

    I found the edidtor note is rather strange :

    Forget about upgrading older fighters, as only putting the F-35 into service with its “so good they’ve stolen it” technology will do.
    A bit transparent, perhaps, but if people have swallowed the “5th-Generation” idea as gullibly as they have, they will certainly believe the idea that its technology is worth stealing.)

    Sometime I wonder if LM and F35 are the name of highly contagious viral disease that mummify your brain’s cells.

    When I go to the local movie theater to see one of the new Zombie stuff from Hollywood, I giggle alone in the dark. Those guys don’t know nothing about the “Stealth war” in aviation related forums on the internet. 😉

    Not much of AF447 was found. Crash attitude after a shot down would have been comparable (low frwd speed, nose up or down).

    It depends. Depending on the lower ceiling demanded a single surveilance radar like the P-14 is enough to cover the air-space of a circle of over 1000 km in diameter to have a picture of the related airspace. You can get the data from that site or from that of a supporting neighbour country if the opportunity is given. In the former GDR alone we had several hundred and in war-time over a thousand emitter.
    For a similar reason an AWACS is send to Romania to survey the lower airspace of most of the Ucraine and the Crimea f.e.
    We can assume that a country of some size going to war with the USA will have several radars and passiv sensors to count on. Like sensors listening for noise f.e., and the F-35 is very noisy in flight. Optical scanning via “TV” or IRST a.s.o.
    You will know your own critical points and may have the realistic idea what are the main targets of a F-35 and where they have go to depress or to destroy that. There are jammers at hand against GPS guided weapons. There are reflectors at hand aginst radar guided weapons, there are special netings available against infra-red or optical guided weapons including laser. You can have dummies. You can harden sites. You can link antenna to offset power and control units. You can create fake signals.
    All that was done in former conflicts and will be done in the future. A F-35 is a tool to allow to win the air-superiority battle over a given area in the shortest possible time. How short and to what cost depends on the opponent.
    Maybe a missed it, a mobile radar can emitter a short time for a “snapshot” of the present situation and move till the next emitter. The F-35 will move with ~900 km/h, so every minute another radar can do a snap and the ones in the F-35s run into a problem, which is to track or to engage. Maybe you are approaching or leaving the last recorded contact. Be it a real target or you are under the way to be trapped.

    Whatever is claimed, for every threat some procedures and systems are developed to counter that. All tactical surprises are short lived.

    I have no problem to accept, that with the F-35 I will have the easier part for some time in the future or better advantage because it allows high mobility and to concentrate the related force where it is of most value for my intentions.

    If the USAF had 15 000 F111, 40 000 pilots with 38 000 of them not bothered to die, for sure they won’t need the F35 !

    Actually it’s the Hornet that got the F404 — the SH got the F414 (sorry about being pedantic); Gripen C/D has he RM12 which is built on F404, Gripen E will use the F414.

    As for combat proven: Is the F-35 combat proven…?

    If the phones have survived then that would suggest the aircraft came down over land (otherwise the water damage would have killed them, and besides I doubt they’d have signal over water). However I find it improbable it’s come down over land, so I’d probably question the sources.

    I certainly don’t believe that would be the case starikki, any shoot down would have to come from the Malaysian prime minister himself, and given the aircraft wasn’t flying to any specific target (eg Kuala Lumpur) at the time it’s unlikely. I heard here in the UK, priministerial protocol suggests a known hijacked aircraft needs to come within 30 seconds of central London before the go ahead is given. It really is a last resort.

    The Telegraph is reporting that Boeing sent out an airworthiness directive to all 772 operators in November to look out for fatigue cracks (after a 16 inch crack was found in one aircraft) under the SATCOM antenna in the fuselage. The directive went onto say that these fatigue cracks could result in sudden decompression or mid-air “break up”.

    From the telegraph article:

    “We received a report of cracking and corrosion in the fuselage skin underneath the SATCOM antenna adapter,” the FAA warned. “During a maintenance planning data inspection, one operator reported a 16-inch crack under the 3-bay SATCOM antenna adapter plate in the crown skin of the fuselage on an aeroplane that was 14 years old with approximately 14,000 total flight cycles.

    Corrosion + cracking is not good at all in a dynamic environment. The reported 16in crack seems also really huge and sounds alarming.

    Do we have a link toward that FAA report?

    To get back on topic;

    There is a reason why Turkish Navy is deploying to Black Sea; Back in the day, when Ottoman empire lost Crimea to Russian Empire, the Kaynarca treaty (which granted independence of Crimea Khanate from Ottoman Empire) and the following treaty signed in April 9 1783 when Crimean Khanate joined Russia states that Crimea belongs to Russian Empire and cannot declare its independence on its own, otherwise Crimea will be given back to Ottoman Empire. This treaty is still in effect according to international laws. In short, Crimea has no right to declare its independence without Turkey allowing it. If current Crimean goverment declares Independence, Turkey has the right to envoke Kaynarca treaty, and demand that Crimea be returned to Turkey.

    You may say Crimea is just changing hands, but thats not the case; It HAS to declare its independence from Ukraine first, to join Russia. As declaring its independence will not be legal according to international laws, it simply can’t join Russia. Surely its a longshot to get involved, but Turkey also has responsibilty (again due to Kaynarca Treaty) to Tatar Turks present in Crimea. We are likely to use this treaty as bargaining chip in return for the rights of Tatar Turks; IF they are threatened. Increased military presence and overreaction to Russian aircraft (ordinary intercepts of Russian aircraft is now carried by squadrons of 8 F-16’s (http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/gundem/25938882.asp) instead of sending single aircraft), are simply to show we are taking matters seriously. Not we are interested to get involved in a military conflict.
