It’s not the cumulative sorties number my friend, it’s the number of target destroyed. Get a pocket calculator, a sheet of paper and draw three columns. In the first one write the number of target destroyed in the sortie, on the second one the nbr of losses sustained and on the last one the number of plane supporting the strike. Sum it all and then draw your own conclusion.
A B2 can annihilate for example 16 targets in a single sortie. This is what a country are expecting now: a sustainable way of conducting operations. And I am not speaking of the denied zone where non-stealthy jet can’t operates without expecting a tremendous amount of losses.
And by the way, the 2nd alleged 117 was not rebuilt since there was no point of rebuilding a damaged plane that was part of a fleet nearly being decommissioned (another example of the miss-use of number and stats).

Regarding the Mil17, don’t you think that the flight pattern looks like somewhat erratically? At first I thought it was flying at low alt but since it was identified to be flying at 14kft? I am curious.
Retiring the Vulcan was a mistake. An evolved design based on the Vulcan with new flight control, engine, avionics and integration with modern weapons arsenal would be an awesome platform (even mroe effective than the TSR2, I’d say)

You are absolutely right: the services lack tankers in part due to the mission rate of the the KC135 and cannot afford to loose some of the unique capacity of the KC10 like speed of the actual refueling and tonnage of transferable fuel.
But scraping the KC10 don’t hve to be brutal and blunt. Imagine the USAF transferring part of its force to contractors and mothballing the rest. An aggressive contractor will draw a lot of attention from countries that needs point or OP only refueling services and don’t want to invest 300M for a tanker. So you’ll hve a viable service for your own fleet the time the 46 are available in great number and kill the tanker market for the next 10 years (the goal is to get scale economy for the overall acquisition of a full tanker fleet beyond the ones alrdy ordered).
Look at OMEGA. Last time I checked they had a profitable niche with their small fleet.
It is a concept that has received frequent studies, but no takers. That suggests that there are problems, either real or potential.
The fact that some firms hve studied, made proposal and worst of all, published artistic image of the concept, tells you a lot abt what was the average level of IQ among top executives in those company.

Also EMB314s PT6 engine is used by a whole heap of other aircraft often found in other aircraft used by smaller operators – Beech B90, B200, Air Tractors, T-34Cs, DHC-6s, PC-6s, PC-7s, BT-67s, Y-12s, Pipers and Cessnas (and even the old IAI Aravas if any are still operational).
This simplifies logistics and training.
Also many small operators don’t operate any jet aircraft, so a turbofan equipped aircraft brings moe complexity into the mix.
Given that we hve seen and still see T37, Bronco, Mohawk, Puccara being flown till the last remaining hours of their cells, I hve no doubt that there is a market for the plane. Payload wise, performances are on the top list. You can’t compare it with a turboprop.
Just like an A10. Yes you can see it like that. But this is not a Hog… I wld certainly prefer to seat in a J6 when the manpads start flowing ard π
I think ppl don’t understand the situation in which LM has cornered itself. It made a proposal, the X35 and then intended to go straight forward from the demo plane to the LRIP until a lot of Capabilities were added to the plane. Given that theGeo was dictated by the VTOL requirement, they had to pack a lot of item in a small and short body with each time a new iteration of the overall design.
At one time it seems to me that they choose to let go with some problem and concentrate on the capacity required. Hence the prob with the hook geo, the G limitation, the nitrogen system for the tank sealing etc.. All those problem are weight, structure and geo related. Of course, nobody can exclude the glitch imparted by a non-impartial contractor selection process due to the political mess going around and Stock-Market focused management.
Add to this that suspicion of high level corruption feed the aspiration of a certain type of individuals in a company to get there own share with a disastrous result on overall efficiency and reliability (the fuel connector?) and you hve a nest for a growing bird that you can only call Messy π
But no-one shld finger-point LM here. This is sadly something that you can observe on many other company. The scale of the program makes simply the prob horrendous

The wing/inlet interference provide a very interesting geometry with its diffuser like outlet on the trailing edge of the wing roots.
They choose to field a double vertical tail instead of a single one with a lot of cant angle. Probably that the large surface of the central body (for the fitting of a massive weapon/sensor bay Γ la WB57 certainly) would hve a lead to a very massive vertical tail with a detrimental impact on empty weight and mass distribution. The large cant angle might provide redundant control in case of a missile hit.
It appears there is some provision for IR missile passive protection. That include the wide gap btw the two engines (no masking)

All the tails surfaces field classics ctrl including the tail surface what is odd for the dive limitation that it will impose on the plane in the CAS role. A transonnic capability might hve eased pilot workload but the straight wing would hve had to be swept.
