Me again
related to this topic a request for help:
does anyone have good quality photographs of the famous line-ups of the 78th FG P-51’s at Duxford in Summer 1945 ? I’ve seen some in old Koku-Fan issues, but would need good quality & high rez scans or prints. The reason is that a few of these aircraft later were sold to the Swiss AF…
TIA !!!

Some chronological order

BBD when J.D. landers was still Lt. Col. – note light color on name-plate.

BBD with full scoreboard applied – rank changed and color of nameplate, too

same as above, different angle

Full view with added chequers on wingtips

same aircraft after Landers transferred to the 361st FG (with 44-72218) – new codes E2-I, scoreboard remains….. taken from Peter Randall’s littlefriends site here, where you will find additional details:

T J – both is (almost) correct – when Landers was Lt. Col., the background color of the name plate on the canopy frame was of a lighter color – either yellow or orange, but when he became a ‘full’ Col. the color changed to red.
Another interesting bit to the original aircraft (44-72218) is the fact, that with all of the photos and hoo-haas about Landers WZ-I “Big Beautiful Doll”, the aircraft flew only 9 combat missions from 25 February to 25 April 1945. Makes one wonder if this was just a photo ops aircraft for the propaganda machine….

ok, before I have some lunch – here’s a small photo of RCAF-9246 while still active…
Martin
and here’s a photo of the Lambeth example while still in Canada…..
it is
RCAF 9246, ex P-51D-25-NA 44-73979 delivered 6 December 1950; served shortly with No. 416 Sqn, wfu 16.5.1951, to A612 (RCAF) Instructional airframe; on exhibit at St. Jean airbase;

hmm
when was the Lambeth example put on strings ? – I took photographs in Spring 1984 where she is in pieces and being worked at in a Hangar at Duxford, right beside “Candyman / Moose”…
IIRC the FW-190 also was standing on its wheels at Duxford then….
Must fire up my negative scanner tonight….

and here’s the one now hanging at IWM Lambeth (with wrong serial #)

Bonjour Chacal et bienvenu ici !
There are many P-51’s that were lost over water and only because of a diver luckily discovered the ‘Radio Call” plate on the instrument panel, reading “2-106-748”, an identification was possible without raising the aircraft itself.
As per my information, the wreck isn’t a very recent discovery, but the ID is.
Laurent (happymeal), est-ce que tu as des informations differents ?
Merci & Salutations

The aircraft is sitting at 55 meters depth near the Island of Porquerolles SE of Toulon. The photographs were taken (copyright) by professional diver & photographer Frédéric Bassemayousse.
