    Yeah, well…

but how often I overheard “enthusiasts” boasting with their knowledge:
A P-40 being was recognized as “Hurricane”, or a Hurricane became a “Spitfire” because of the roundels or a silver (Griffon) Spitfire becomes a “Mustang” because of the bubble canopy, etc. etc. etc. …

(I don’t know wheter anyone of you has seen all my teethmarks in the fences and loudspeaker poles around airfields because of that…)

The thing is that a greater part of the crowds attending airshows goes watching Aeroplanes with and without propellers. Period.

We enthusiast are those who love to see a variety of examples of one aircraft type being displayed and of course a variety of types as well.

Many people are quite familiar with names such as Hurricane, Spitfire, Hunter, Mustang (car, horse or what – ah – a plane…), Lightning (which one ? twin-boom or…), etc., but many don’t really know how such a plane looks like, unless the speaker says so.

Sure such famous types act as a magnet for the more knowledgeable community, but in general its things with wings.

    Hi

I consider myself lucky to have witnessed Dh-100 Vampires, Dh-112 Venoms and Hawker Hunters in active service over a period of many years (yes, I am Swiss…) and kind of got used to seeing such beautiful aircraft almost daily. Although I sometimes miss the whining / shrieking of the Goblin and Ghosts and the rumble of Avons since these magnificent birds were retired here (a few have returned to the skies though), the sound of a piston engined Warbird is the best music in my ears.

I do prefer Avgas over Jet A1, but I don’t mind seeing those Warbird jets at all.

    Cheers

    Hi

“Pink Lady” flew in this livery, i.e. as “Lucky Lady” already in 1985 where she also attended DΓΌbendorf (Zurich) airshow. I should have a few pics if you are interested.

    Hi all

    copied from the P-51 Board:

    ——————————————————————————–

    All,

I will give a brief update, I can’t spend a bunch of time here. It was a terrible loss. I was flying the B-25 landing and Don said he was losing the engine, Larry Lumpkin was on the ground in the Gunfighter and told Don to turn on the boost pump, I said get the prop back, Don said, that is all done. Larry said, Fly it to the ground Don, Fly it to the ground.”

That is exactly what he did.

The airplane landed in a wings level low speed low angle condition, as survivable as it could be. He hit one tree which took off one wing, and then another which spun him around and the airplane came to rest on it right side with both wings severed.

The Crash crews were there with in 4 minutes. Larry took off imeadiately to locate the wreckage incase the crash crews could not find it, and by the time he was overhead they were there.

Gerry Beck came down this morning and went with the FAA to the wreckage. Early indications are that the V drive which powers the cam failed. Both cams would quit turning and there was nothing that Don could have done but fly it to the ground. He did that.

Your thoughts and prayer for his family are appreciated. Don would never forgive us if we let this setback stop the Redtail project which he gave the last 10 years, and ultimately his life for. With a million bucks and 18 months we could be flying again. Don would want that. Wish us luck.

    Papa Lima….

amazing shots – 1000 thanks for posting these. Just saw them while preparing a BBQ (am tasting the beer right now πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ ).

Since I am on a dial-up connection at my girlfriends place, I don’t have my working-tools (i.e. database, etc) with me. Will revert with as much info on each ship as possible next Tuesday.

NB: sure thing I am pursuing Jane for you… πŸ˜‰

Also thanks to all others who have provided more photographs of “my” beloved Mustang.

    Cheers

Looks like they still have their protective coating applied at the factory prior shipment to the ETO.

    What a shame !
