    Hi

I will dig in my archive for Saab J-21A info – Production of the piston-engined variant ran until 1949 and was continued with the J-21R (jet-engined) variant. The prop-driven type stayed in service until 1954, so your time-frame fits.

    Hi Dog House

    I actually have a few photographs of a 305th BG 366th BS B-17F – it’s 41-24592 / KY-G that landed in Switzerland on 6 September 1943 and was interned.

There have also been two B-17F of the 364th BS. Please PM me your e-mail and I’ll send you high-rez scans.

    Thanks and best regards

    Salut Laurent

yup, it’s one of the Swiss two-set aircraft – actually is is an U.S. in-field conversion, by removing the fuselage tank and adding a jump-seat – and cutting the canopy to have two individual sliding parts in order to facilitate entry for the passenger. Switzerland had two of these conversion, plus two more two-seaters, but with regular canopy.
This sort of conversion I have observed on approx a dozen USAAF aircraft – some of them were equipped with additional UHF equipment and used for relay duties, others were simply used as VIP-taxi and base hack.

I will make a listing with serials of the P-51D two seaters done within the ETO and MTO.

Below’s a detail shot of the two-seat installation

BTW – these and other photos will be included in my forthcoming book on the Swiss AF Mustangs 🙂

    Regards

…and for comparison, Spitfire taking off from USS Wasp – note the different flight-deck – a good recognition aid

At airshows, I didn’t see much vandalism (only one stupid guy punching holes into the rudder fabric of a Stampe biplane about 15 years ago in France), but in Museums, I sometimes wish I had an electro-shocker handy – people climbing on aircraft and other exhibits and trying to remove things, or those youngsters with their permanent markers who think it’s cool to leave their ‘tag’ everywhere.

Only the numerous presence and rigorous action of museum staff helps to preserve the preserved material.
