Is there a reason why ’63 wasn’t preserved as an AEW?
Seems a real mish mash at the mo with MR.2 colour scheme and no APS radome, but also with short bomb doors and no ASV radome.
Apart from WR960 it would be nice to see another Shack kept as it left service – just as a good old AEW.2!
If it ever comes to getting it flying I think the CAA are keen to keep things as one particular known mark or mod. state.

The thing is mate, we have actually got the dustbin to fit to the rear of the old girl, but the bay that used to contain it has a mass of AEW gear in it (or something) as well as a set of long bomb bay doors

it is our eventual intention to fit these parts, but we have more pushing concerns at the moment (as you can imagine) correct me if im wrong, are there any complete MR2 variants anywhere? or are all the taildragger shacks legt AEW.2

The radar was removed because it was dangerous (something to do with the output?) we still have the AEW radome, but it needs some repair.

Any idea why top boom replacement is now mandatory when the much higher utilised lower and web have already been done?

Its the CAA requirement for a permit to fly

Interesting to note that this was never required for an in service Shack.

Im pretty sure she has got to the point now where she needs the top boom doing as a matter of course, i think thats why almost all of the shacks were retired at about 15,000 flying hours

Anyone know what hours PA474 has on her?

i dunno mate, I hope that the work being done now will mean she is safe to fly for a good few many years yet, if the recent fundraising has been for this spar mod, then hopefully this will be the last of the major problems with the aircraft 🙂

They didnt make any mate, the kits that were lying around for the “respar” of the shacks, were for the bottom boom.

No one has ever replace the top boom on a shack, they all had the bottom booms replaced in their liftime, but never the top boom

Just to put ten pence in is not 963 in the situation that she needs an estimated 4 million to ever fly again . full break down and Respar with the billet blanks costing 75 k.lots of airframe bits but a shortage of major electrical and hydraulic spares ?. or has someone fell on a pot of Growler parts other than those sitting on static frames rotting in different parts of the world ?.

Yes she does need that, more like £5million. We dont have a shortage of any hydraulic or electrical spares. We have a barn full of spares. we have so much that we dont know everything we have, this will all be sorted out soon. with regards to the respar – She needs the top booms doing, the webs and bottom booms were all new at her last major. as was the whole tailplane. it confuses me since I know that no one has ever replaced the top boom on a shackleton nor were replacements made, therefore I wonder if PA474 has ever had her top boom replaced….?

Whilst im confused as to why this is relevant to my question about the spar on the Vulcan???

In addition to the above question that seems to have been forgotten

Does she still not need a major rear spar mod fairly soon in her flying life?

im sure only the front of back spar has been done

I would certainly be interested in saving her cockpit section If its on my own, or with other forumites 🙂

Its been suggested but we would never be able to have anything that fired, there are a load of O2 bottles up front (i presume located after the AEW conversion)

Hi david, as pagen said that is a cracking photo!

Currently our aim is to keep her in good ground running/fast taxi condition. we need to finish the engine swap, service all of the flying controls, service the main UC legs change the port wheel and both mainwheel brake units (amongst a whole host of other things)

She should be doing a taxi run over summer (hopefully) as well as several engine runs 🙂
