The An-70 looks great at this point…all it needs is a kick start. At least they know the An-70 can fly…

    Congratulations….
    The T-44s look fun…if a bit old.
Let us know what year model they are and how many flying hours they have.
I think the Navy bought them in the early 70s…I don’t know if they,ve bought any new ones.

If you get into 130s, it looks like Dyess may be in your future.
If so I’ll give you some pointers about the area…resturants, where to get an old Jeep rebuilt…

    When were you at Dyess?

    The Beehive is always good…

    As well as Perini Ranch

Just out of curiosity, if you for some reason would decide to go for a civilian career in the future, what would be the best background for that?

One could suppose that flying a big multi engine plane like C-130 could be a better reference for an airliner. Or are any military pilot equally qualified in the eyes of the big airline companies? And I suppose the USAF has some kind of long term contract for it’s pilots.

And good luck, I hope you’ll have fun!

We had a lot of pilots go to SWA after they retired.
Long term contract? No, but in this day and age…the USAF s a tad more stable then flying for the airlines (For now)

They do offer bonuses for the pilots 🙂
I on the other hand was a NBA 😉

I fully expect to be sent to a lot of crappy places, but I didn’t join the military expecting to always have cushy assignments and the like.

With that being said, I still think that flying the Herc will be something I’ll really enjoy. I mean there are positives and negatives to any airframe out there, and so when I thought about the planes I wanted to fly, the C-130 kept coming into my head time and again. I’m glad it has worked out this way, and hopefully I’ll be as successful in Phase III as I was in Phase II.

I’m a young naive butter bar, so the J model is kinda what I want to fly, but I suppose I’ll worry about the bridge when I come to it (i.e. graduate from Corpus).

You have a great attitude…keep that up and you’ll go far! Enjoy your time on the herk, she is a wonderful plane and I feel very privileged for the assignments that I had and the people I was stationed and deployed with. It is a great community built on mountains and years of knowledge.

In the mean time (I am sure you already know this site well)

Congrats! Keep safe and keep us posted.

How do they hand out J model slots?

    😀 With a shield and a spit guard…

Happy with it is an understatement.

When all is said and done I’m going to be flying one of the most legendary airplanes to ever take flight.

I just hope they cut my orders soon so I don’t have to wait too long until I start training at Corpus.

😉 We’ll see if you think that after your 19th deployment to the same rathole time and time again

(Psst, I felt the same way…and I still love the old girl)

Only been through there twice. Yeah they do roll up the streets in Abilene when the sun goes down.

    Keep us informed PH.

Former RAAF 36 or 37 squadron?

Yeah, Abilene is a pathetic little town…

It it still all a bunch of red brick buildings or did that change?

    Good Luck PH.

They have updated the buildings a tad. They have a new BX…but it did not open till after I left.

The C-130s have a beautiful new building where all of MX and the two flying squadrons are in there…with the briefing room/theater is in the center and Life Support is in the back under the same roof…makes life a bit easier.

It wasn’t the base that made Dyess a horrible place…it was Abilene…and the absolute lack of anything to do.
We were praying for BRAC to take the C-130s away…and they would have if the dernd city of Abilene and Kay Bailey Hutchison didn’t step in and protest 🙂 we were all pissed off…and the B-1 guys were coming in trying to take our brand new building 🙂

You know the place is bad…when everyone is wishing and hoping to be reassigned to Little Rock!!

Gen. John Corley, chief of Air Combat Command briefed preliminary findings from the accident investigation board:1) The B-2 rotated for takeoff prematurely. 2) That rotation was excessive. 3) The mishap aircraft stalled with the left wingtip dragging the ground first. 4) The aircraft impacted and slid alond the ground in a wings-level condition. 5) Both wing fuel tanks caught fire simultaneously.

Do you have a link to these findings?
