When it comes to pure technology, both European fighters could be sold much cheaper. It is the software for every sub-system and its integration, what costs a fortune to develop independly and eats up by that a lot of time too.
When managed and at hand, something like a European “F-35” becomes a possibility. It is the source-code of every sub-system, which will make the difference in performance. Even when the USA sold Block 60 F-16s to the UAE, which incorporate some extra high-tech. The overall performances will be less than USAF F-16 Block 50s. It is the software, which will free and give the performance level of every system. So the customer has to decide, which producer he will give his confidence about that. The Europeans do not offer a weapons-system with all performances alone, but own ordonance too. Both fighters are related to countries in the EU and will suffer from similar restrictions. USA and Europe are connected by NATO, so the USA is not free to act independently in all cases. Russia is running out of steam and China has still a long way to go.
Compared to the European fighters the Flanker and its variants becomes outdated and the J-10 is a generation behind.
The F-22 and later the US-versions of F-35. First class
The Typhoon, Rafale and later export version of F-35. Second class
    The Flankers, J-10, Mirage 2000, F-15s, F-16s and F-18s. Third class
    The FC-1, MiG-29s. Fourth class
The prices are accordingly. You get, what you pay for.
This is not an excact classification, but gives an idea about that. The best avionic is seen as decessive, when best flight performances are not so.
Even 1990 showed, that the Iraqi AF was a waste of money, when it came against a high-tech adversary.

You surely know more than me about combat aircraft but permit a layman to voice some questions:
Could considering Rafales and Typhoons better than the latest flankers be considered a highly subjective and Eurocentric opinion?
With the chinese integrating Israeli avionics, could it be said that avoinics wise the J-10s would not be much behind europe? (and definitely not a generation away)
My personal opinion (and I freely admit I am no expert) is that fighter technology, minus stealth and AAMs has more or less plateaued between the top producers – Russia, Europe, USA. Correct me if I am wrong but a Chinese Flanker or J-10 armed with SD-10s will be able to compete on an even footing with any Rafale or Eurofighter or JAS-39. It will all then boil down to AWACS and pilot skill.

    Peace

I think its quite clear from the specs that the typhoon is somewhat better than the raphale but its way too expensive… one would expect sunk costs to be lower where so many countries are participating but this doesnt seem to be the case… wonder where they spent all that money in development when many of the subsystems are not very different from what was already technologically available particularly in american fighters. I don’t think either will do well in the export market, most desault customers are looking at mirages with rafale’s best technologies integrated and not at the rafale itself. eurofighter has no future beyond europe’s borders. with so much competion and so few customers things are really heating up.

Bad idea for pakistan in the long-term strategic sense. She’ll forever be dependent on nodding uncle sam to keep getting spares. Ideally I think we should get the FC-1s reverse engineer the engines if the russians refuse and add western avionics… if the us is will right now, use us avionics on the FC-1 but in no condition should pakistan become dependent on spares from the us.. remember after Iran and syria there is a very real chance that it could be pakistan

My two pennies worth: Picture of a wreckage in Serbia of an aircraft later identified as an F117 by two journalists from two different locations. One picture shows a tail clearly showing that it did not have F117 camo but looked very like an F15 tail… only one aircraft was admitted to have been downed by the US.

Also it is widely accepted that the Israelis never accept their losses so there is a big question mark there as well.

How many are said to be ordered and are they going to be the old ones or are they going to be upgraded to the Block-50 level? Thanks.
