No at this moment there are no major polder projects in Holland.

You sure about that? The 2de Maasvlakte near Rotterdam is I believe still in the process of being reclaimed? Or has the reclamation already finished? I lost track on that project. Other then that I don’t think there are any projects going on. Lots of ambitious plans though.

Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll check the fares when I’m back home tonight, but by the sound of it my holiday plans might yet be upgraded.

Wasn’t there a recent story about a Canadian court case where they ruled being obese/huge/hugely fat was a disability and passenegers could not be forced to pay extra?

There was, and the article mentions it too. But Canadian jurisprudence has no influence on Australian law and jurisprudence. Unless there is some Commonwealth law linking the two, but that would surprise me a lot.

I’ve flown on PH-KLE but I didn’t know she’d been retired. Any idea what’s due to happen to her?

Sorry, I do not know. They will no doubt be sold to someone. They are after all still fairly economical in operation and KLM always maintains their planes well. Their despatch reliabilty is starting to suffer though.

As LBA-EGNM already mentioned all but the four youngest F100s will be retired over the next few months into 2010ish. The F70s are here to stay for another few years. They really are in a niche of their own. For a regional jet of its size the cargo hold is very large. The Embraer 170’s hold is a lot smaller, and the CRJ and ERJ series are not even close.

The same applies to the F100 when compared with the Embraer 190, but lately the despatch reliability has started to deteriorate leading to many delays and cancellations. The F70s and the four younger F100s do not suffer from that problem as they are younger. I’ve been told they have more advanced electronics making trouble-shooting easier and preventative maintenance more focussed.

I think only the Jetstream could make it. There are a lot of planes that size that will need replacement in the next few years. Not counting Russian types only the Beech 1900 is still in production (kinda) and it is hardly up to date. An updated Jetstream might not be glamorous, but it could probably be done.

The ATP was hardly a succes when it was still around, for that reason alone I would not expect it to become a succes when re-launched.

I don’t know much about Manston, but I think I would if they had regular DC-8s and 707s operating from there! 😉
Perhaps theres one or two sitting idle there? Is that what you mean?

There is at least 1 MK Airlines DC-8 sitting there awaiting better times. And those times may well come as the Aviodrome museum is looking at buying it. However, that plane is no longer airworthy. If the Aviodrome manages to buy the plane, it will be shipped over.

You need to take the subway from the airport to Barajas (one stop IIRC) – that reduces the walk substantially and the fare is very cheap.

    Now you tell me. 😀

Cheers for that Peter and Sam. I did see that spottign guide on plane-mad.com, but all the locations looked too far to walk. Peter, you say that walk is quite long, but do you know approx how long it took? I’ve booked the flight for the end of March, only 5 hours on the ground so I’m hoping to atleast get 2 hours taking photos.

About 40 or 45 minutes. Don’t know the time it takes from T4 though.

OOo, I’m jealous. Share your pictures.

Sorry, that flight was before I got a digital camera. The prints are somewhere in a box in the attic. Besides, considering the quality of my point-and-shoot compact back then I’m sure you won’t find them that interesting. Even I am not particularly interested in them!

That flight must have been around 13 or 14 years ago! Still remember it vividly though! G-AKIF, my first flight ever.

Hi all, just wondered if anyone here has done much spotting/photography at Madrd Barajas, and in particular did anyone fly in there to do so? STN-MAD day return in March on Ryanair is £10 inc taxes etc, pretty damn good for a flight to a major airport! I’m definitely thinking of going down there but not sure if anywhere is easily accessible for photos, or if you need locals knowledge/access to a car to get anywhere for photos.

MAD is one of my favourite airports to go spotting! It’s a very good place.

You can spot planes from one of the snackbars in one of the terminals, but I must admit I forgot which terminal, definately one of the older ones. Views here are poor as your are facing through dirty glass.

Much better is a spot on the perimeter. It takes a while to walk there, but it is quite worth the effort. There is a small sand-path leading up an embankment near the intersection marked M110 on below map. If you follow that path you will end up at the spotters area. Here planes taxi past closely. With my 70-200MM I could easily handle all the movements, though everything roughly sized B772 and larger would not fit side-on. Movements at T4′ sattelite terminal can be seen, and the A340-600s can even be photographed due to their large size, but expect heathaze to be a killer. This spot will be best between 12:00 and sundawn, earlier and the sun will be facing you.

You are in the middle of nowhere, so prepare yourself by bringing something to drink/eat.

Unfortunatley the reason I am going is work, and that’s on Monday!

No arguments about spending the afternoon in town but when it gets into double figures of times visiting Amsterdam you start to run out of things to do on your own :p

I think there are considerably more then double-digit windows in Amsterdam. :dev2:

I’d rather fly out monday morning, return monday night but no…a day return is about £450

You can also go for a one night stay saturday to sunday. Since most interesting planes are early morning arrivals you might as well take that option. The afternoon can be spend quite nicely in town.
