Well i cant help the first post but an ipod is a small computer that can fit into your pocket. It takes songs from cd’s or taken from the itunes store and it puts them into the ipod. You can have 1000’s of songs stored as it compresses the file size.

They are fantastic pieces of kit and i would recomend one

    check this out

What’s the difference between an iPod and a cheap MP3 player, besides a shedload of money. Also, can I play my regular MP3 on a iPod, or does it only play songs from iTunes?

There is a “chat frequency” for pilots. Not sure if these frequencies are universal or only certain areas where the skies are likely to be empty (transatlantic, transpacific etc).

Reports of five crew and ten passengers surviving. It is interesting that the airline Hewa Bora was put on the EU’s blacklist of airlines last Friday.

Hewa Bora has been on the blacklist for much longer then that. Till recently however they had an exemption for one particular plane to continue the BRU run. Since that plane has been (is?) parked at BRU for a long time awaiting maintenance they probably revoked it’s rights as well.

Nice shots there Peter. Is this a new airline? and is it ex KLM Cityhopper?

Not a new airline, though till now the airline only flew Brasilias and King Airs. So the F100 is a big step up for them.

This Fokker, and the others that will follow, are all ex Air Berlin.

    Who’s next? 🙁

This is chapter 11, not chapter 7. Frontier will reorganise and then emerge as a more profitable carrier. Well, that’s the theory anyway. Don’t count them out just yet.

http://www.jetphotos.net is airliners.net’s largest competitor. Also large is http://www.planepictures.net/, but their search engine is less advanced.

I like the ‘open skies’ lettering, but other than that it is rather boring as it is mainly white and has the same tail as the normal BA aircraft, I know it is a subsidary, but they need to change it to make it stand out a bit more in my opinion!:D

Bring back the Chelsea Rose livery! That was a nice one and still instantly recognisable as BA.

Thank you guys for all the kind comments.
Ryanair have put on extra flights this weekend between Shannon & Bristol to bring the Munster supporters over to the west country for the Heineken Quarter Final – No doubt you can guess where I am flying out to this morning for the weekend, and for how much?! 😎

Thank you once again for the kind comments guys.

Is it the light, or is the tail livery a bit dull (less bright) when compared to regular BA tails? Prefer the original BA livery myself.

Thanks for opinions! The map will be updated regularly.
    Newforest, I don’t know any French low-cost airline…

Transavia France has been set up as a low cost operator. They already started some flights, but more will be added over the coming weeks/months. At the moment they got a fleet of four F- registered B737-800s in regular Transavia livery.

Excellent photos, really nice! That Virgin 744 was at AMS today. Will be out of action for a while since I believe it is getting a D-check at KLM.

From what I understand this is not a problem with BAA. Apparantly the problem is with BA.

The bags are checked-in properly and in a timely fashion. Then they go to the loading dock without delay. At this point BA takes over and will drive the bags from the dock to the airplane. And apparantly BA’s staff are having difficulties with this. Various reasons have been given. For instance staff being unfamiliar with the new layout (thus looking for the right dock, parking space, gate), staff having additional security checks as well as the usual understaffing that you always get when you split your personnel pool in two (T5 and T1-4).

    Old planes:
    advantages

    • Cheap to buy/lease, potentially already paid off.
    • Spare parts are more likely to be obtained 2nd hand, thus cheaper.
    • Larger pool of employees to recruite from (pilots, mechanics etc). There are more people with a B733 qualification then there are with a E190.
    • If not necessary a plane can be parked without it costing too much. Think for instance of KLM that has something like 3 or 4 F50s on the ground all the time.
[5Might be able to take advantage of older regulations. For instance new-build combi planes are no longer allowed. Thus several airlines, KLM included, will fly the B74M due to the additional cargo revenue that can not be had from a younger B773.
    • Write-downs are gonna be less.
    • Available immediately.

    disadvantages

    • Maintenance more expensive. In particular if you have to go for your D-check. Most airlines will park an aircraft when it comes up for a C- or D-check. For instance, immediately after 9/11 American Airlines parked several MD80s. They did not do so based on the amount of cycles or the age, but based on which planes needed heavy maintenance first. Thus it was entirely possible that a early MD80 was kept while a late MD80 was retired.
    • Fuel consumption most of the times higher. There might be exceptions like F100 vs B736 but typically not so.
    • You won’t have “bragging rights”. Making advertisements like “average age of our fleet is only 20 years” is not gonna look good. Of course that does not matter. Maintain a plane well and the average flyer won’t know the difference. Case in point obviously being NWA’s DC9s.
    • Due to weight or power restrictions it might not be possbile/economical to put in the latest in in-flight entertainment.
    • When selling the plane you won’t get as much money as you would with a newer plane.
    • Lower dispatch reliability, though proper maintenance should negate that.

    new planes
    advantages

    • Operating costs (maintenance, fuel) are likely to be lower. See disadvantages for a minor caveat
    • Write-downs will be more.
    • Increased bragging rights.
    • Dispatch reliability is likely to be better.
    • Better IFE (again bragging rights). Tend to be better prepared for future improvements in IFE in the form of additional electricity supply or ability to increase electricity.
    • You can sell on the plane for more money. Ryanair is believed to sell their planes on for more money then they bought them. Of course Ryanair is perhaps unique in that they openly acknowledged “having raped boeing through the floorboards”(I think that is the MoL quote). BTW, above number is probably not adjusted for inflation, but still a good achievement. Exact purchase price is not known so we won’t know for sure.
    • If a new planes type the manufacturer will give discounts to launch customers (at a risk of late delivery, worse performance then anticipated).

    disadvantages

    • More expensive to buy/lease.
    • If a new type for your fleet you will have a lot of extra investments. Pilots and mechanics will need to be trained. A logistics network set up. Spare parts pool will have to be bought. Tools and equipment etc.
    • Waiting time for planes to be delivered.
    • If a new type in your fleet the staff will have to get used to it. This may, initialy, lead to lower dispatch reliability and more expensive maintenance. This will of course only be for a few weeks/months.
    • If a new completely new type the plane may not work as advertised by the manufacturer. Think for instance of the difficulty the A346 had immediately after entry into service. Airbus did have to pay some penalties.

I would also like you to explain why a new fleet is a opportunity when it could just as well be reasoned it is a threat. A new plane does not equal a bright future.
