There are two types that spring to mind as suitable, the already mentioned Viking Otter 400 or a variant of the Cessna 208 Caravan.

Would the Dornier 228 not be a contender as well? I also have heard of two planes in that category being under development. One I forgot and the other being the Evektor EV-55.

How the hell did you make that last photo? I mean, having the plane totally free of clutter. I tried to make the same shot standing on a 5 step ladder with my camera on top of a tripod held above my head and was unable to get a clear shot! Did you rent a cherrypicker (hoogwerker) or something like that?

I like the rest of the shots as well. Unforunately I was at work so I did not see the invasion. Incredible to have so many planes for a 3 hour visit.

To be honest, I don’t really see how the current problems with the 787 really hurt the overall image of the company. Though clearly the image of the 787 program will be affected.

Bare in mind that Boeing sells to airlines and governments. When they decide on a new fleet of aircraft, they do so on cold hard numbers. Usually the decision is also made by commitee, so one’s individual emotions do not really influence the decision unlike when you or me buy for instance a car. So as long as safety, purchase price, operating costs and despatch reliability are fine Boeing will continue to sell. That most of Boeing’s current catalogue are models that have been around a while does not matter much. They have been updated to keep them in line with current needs.

So yes, some of the Boeings are not at the bleeding edge. But sometimes an airline does not even want that. For instance, to maintain commonality with their ‘300 and ‘500 series Southwest asked for a 737NG cockpit as close to the classics as possible. They got what they wanted. Because Southwest was (and still is) one of the first and largest customers for the 737, the rest of the customers got the same package. Only later were more advanced features such as head-up displays added, and even then only as a option!

That’s why for instance any Fokker F100 can land in near zero visibility while most (no?) 737NGs can not do that (maybe the latest NG’s can, don’t know for sure). Does that make the F100 a better plane… well, from an engineering point of view it probably is. Meanwhile Fokker has been bankrupt for 10 years while Boeing is fast approaching the 8000th B737. So again, it’s all about the money.

That’s not to say that the current mess with the 787 won’t leave scars. The immediate scars are quite obvious: penalty payments for delayed planes, maybe some cancelled orders, maybe a few airlines that go to Airbus and the stock price that ain’t that good either.

Longer terms it might become harder to get airlines on board as launch customers. There will always be launch customers, cause the sweeteners that are thrown in are usually very good. But the sweeteners will probably have to be even sweeter then they are now, moving the break-even point even further back. This might also affect the willingness of banks to provide financing.

Considering the origin of a good amount of the worst criminals Dacia’s seem more likely. :diablo:

Further details were revealed. The eight were masked but also wore full police uniforms. Their car and van were dark with a blue flashlight. The robbers managed to drive over half the airport! The route they took is shown at the below link (38 seconds into the movie)

    http://www.deredactie.be/cm/vrtnieuws/mediatheek/programmas/journaal/2.26790/2.26792/1.1552088

120 cases where taken from the plane’s hold by the robbers. Estimated value of the loot is 50 million dollar. The whole heist took less then five minutes from the moment of driving onto airside to the moment of leaving airside.

The robbers have left without a trace. As mentioned earlier a burned out van was found 20 odd KM from the airport. Police have yet to confirm if it was involved in the heist.

Belgian and Dutch press were quick to pick up the story, followed by French and Swiss. But so far I have yet to find a well known English source. So for now Google translate is your friend.

A statement is expected by the justice department around 11:00 local time.

Latest word is the diamonds were valued at 50 million. It is unclear for me if this was the value of the entire consignment, or “only” the value of the stolen diamonds. Apparently the diamonds were rough cut as well, which makes them a lot harder to identify and therefor easier to sell.

Just had a mail from KLM that FlyingBlue members can travel with one free bag. This applies to all FlyingBlue members, not just elite members.

    best looking russian airliner

That’s the livery of former operator Air Volga. They unfortunately went bankrupt so this livery will likely disappear sooner rather then later. Air Volga also had a few CRJs.

There are also a few medevac flights that are all yellow. For instance the Aero-Dienst (Germany) planes operating for ADAC with a fleet of Dornier 328s.

Speaking of all-red in the past the special liveries from Qantas and Malaysia with the Wunala Dreaming and Hibiscus. I suppose the Hibiscus could be classified as mostly red.

Never been keen on “mongrel” planes.

Funny you should say that. At the Eindhoven forum we said the same (the entire BlueBird fleet was painted here). There is just one little detail though… their entire fleet flew for SAS. Not a single one ever flew for Austrian Arrows. Why BlueBird went for an amended Austrian Arrows design we’ll probably never know.

Very nice selection tenthije ! I will ‘cityhop’ over to AMS for a day later in this year, will ask for your help with locations near the time !

    Keith 🙂

No prob, if it’s in the weekend I might join you.

BTW, you might want to consider the weekend prior to 30APR due to the upcoming royal inauguration.

    Plane spotter alert, AMS 30APR!

Tonight (28JAN 19:00 CET) the Queen is going to make a “major announcement”. What exactly is not yet known. Insiders are saying she will step down from the throne 30APR.

If true, expect loads of interesting government movements at AMS and RTM. Book your flights and hotels while they are still cheap-ish!

what is the reason for the anhedral wings on the Tu-134 & Tu154?

From a lateral stability point of view a dihedral wing works has the same effect as wing sweep.

The Tupolev designers valued speed more then efficiency (ye good olde days). To decrease drag they gave the wings a lot of wing sweep. To counter the lateral instability this causes they decided on giving the wing an anhedral profile.

Nowadays with fly by wire it is cheaper and easier to make the planes aerodynamically unstable, instead relying on automated flight controls to maintain stability.
