I think it’s amusing that while B promotes a realistic communal approach to solving the problem, A simply uses it as an opportunity to try and sell more aircraft.

In other words, one is being pragmatic…and the other, selfish.

Another spin you could put on it is that Boeing is not that interested in doing their bit for conservation, preferring outside factors (ATC etc) to do their part. In contrast, Airbus is doing everything it can to prevent the desctruction of life as we know it.

It all depends on the colour of the glasses you are looking through.

When was the last time there was a major military order announced at one of these air shows?

Today’s order for 50 NH-90 split between Germany (42) and Belgium (8) can be considered a mayor order. If I am not mistaken the first export order for the NH-90?

Cool shots, how did you get to that spot? Can you walk there, or would you have to rent a car?

ATR has also had some modest succes:

    • Brazilian TOTAL Linhas Aereas has order 3 ATR42s and 2 ATR72s with options on 5 more unspecified ATRs.
    • Berjaya Air from Malaysia has ordered 4 ATR72s.

And Embraer has had an announcement as well:
[list][*]Lufthansa confirmed its intention to add 30 E190s. This it not quite a new order though. This will replace the order Swissair placed for 15x E175 and 15x E195. First deliery of the E190 is expected around january ’09.

Lastly Bombardier managed to report that the CL-605 has now been allowed for operations into LCY. Earlier this week three of them where sold to Air Independence (Germany) and one to Rizon Jet (Bahrain).

The museum has come back with a statement to all those that signed the statement. Considering the statement is in Dutch and French only I shall translate the statement in full from the Dutch version:

    http://www.bamfbamrs.be/pub/Answeraelr.pdf

The petitions have added a response in English. Page 3 of the below PDF file.
    http://www.bamfbamrs.be/pub/reponsebamf.pdf

Due to the internet petition the petitioners had a meeting the 7th of june with the Koninklijk Legermuseum (Royal Army Museum, hence referred to as KLM).

Here below follows the statement from General Hardy confirmed february 21st (reference BAMM 133):

    1. The KLM has stated a study (emphasis added by KLM) to move the collection to be prepared when the renovation does start.
    2. The petitioners arguments concerning the 1914-1918 exhibits where heard. The museum is studying the possibility to keep the exhibits in the museum during renovation. The interest of these precious pieces is the priority of both the KLM and the AELR. (AELR = museum volunteer organisation?)
    3. The restauration project will not be handed over to the outgoing government. Because of that the restauration will not start till early 2009 at the earilest (see point 1).
    4. Kolonel Musette, recently arrived at the museum, has been given the assignment to look for a potential 2nd KLM site to exhibit the planes that will not return to Brussels.
    5. Our restauration projects are continuing as usual. The LVG was disabled for restauration, not to be added into some remote storage!
    6. The 12 planes that have to leave are leaving due to a attempt by the board to make the museum historically more interesting. The list was to have been discussed the 31st of may at the board of directors. Due to a time shortage this was not possible. At the petitioners request the list will be put on hold until the petitioners can add their comments. The list is not part of the renovation study, and for these 12 planes the best possible storage fascilities will be arranged.
    7. Our AELR will continue to be involved with the project.

    Conclusion
The petition is based on unclear, incomplete and wrong information.

Had the petitioners taken the trouble to verify the information, the petition would not have been started. What I find dissappointing is the complete lack of confidence in both the board of directors, the KLM and the board of directors of the AELR. We where publically attacked and disgraced without any thought to potential consequences.

Here are a few of my shots made during the arrivals day. Special thanks to the SGV and of course the KLu for allowing airside access prior to the actual show!

I still don’t like the look of the ones with the exposed fan blades.

May I give you a warning before you start training to be a pilot. When you get your training it will start on a small prop, and most pilots start their professional career on a turbo-prop. Guess where the blades are? 😉

With the “beaker”, what are the ends of the wings?

The beaker design is supposed to have folding wingtips (similar to carrier based planes). This to be able to get a bigger span plane on a smaller gate, thus saving gate space and airport charges. Was actually also proposed for the 777, to make sure it would fit on a 767 gate. However the folding mechanism was too heavy so no airline took the option.

or a faster aircraft with only fuel consiumsion saved

Decreased speed and lower fuel consumption go hand in hand. Increased speed and better fuel consumption are not possible. You might be able to get more speed with similar consumption as current planes, but even that is doubtfull. Regardless, the way fuel prices are going you do not want to have a plane with current fuel consumption even if it does go a tad faster. Boeing tried that before with the Sonic Cruiser and airlines where not quite fighting for delivery slots.

Please explain why the birds are more likely to strike engines mounted at the tail then when said engines are mounted on the wings?

I thought he just went out of business because, according to many, he was incapable of running his airline to the business plan he envisaged.

I did not realise he sold Alpha One for a huge profit, but there you go.

Man of many talents. First school, then an “airline”, then internet TV, then a music shop…where next for the Baby Branson?

Since he is trying to get into every branch Branson tried, the next logical step would be A1 Mobile, A1 Cola, A1 radio or A1 trains. Also, if I am not mistaken in the past Virgin had a utility company that did not work (correct me if I’m wrong) so perhaps A1 can make it work? 😀

Hmmm whether I should publically state this or not I don’t know :p, but I rarely if ever buy Airliner World anymore for some reason. The most recent edition I brought was last months one for my American flights from Heathrow.

Same here, I am sorry to say. I like the magazine a lot, but the price they dare ask for it here in NL is insane. It is already over 9 euros, fast approaching 10 (~6,76 pounds).

Also availability has gone down a lot. Just two years ago every good news agents carried it, thus improving the likelyhood of me buying it on an impulsive because there was an interesting article. Nowadays I need a Ouija board and a divining rod to even get to see one! Only places I know of that still carry it are the stores at Schiphol airport! If I go to buy it there I can add another 5 euros (minimum) in parking costs… me thinks not!

On the bright side, Air International and Air Forces Monthly are still available in the region. But also horribly expensive.

    The storage is in Vissenaken.

Is there any opportunity to store/display the planes temporarily at other aviation museums? I would imagine the Aviodrome, Soesterberg, Le Bourget, Duxford and a lot of other museums would be happy to be able to display original WW1 planes. Or indeed one of their other planes. Maybe there are some possible museums in Belgium as well? I must admit I do not really know any other aviation musuem in Belgium except for the small one at Antwerp.

Thx all for the nice comments I received so far 😉

The KDC-10’s are indeed based at Eindhoven and so are the C130’s , sadly I didn’t saw any of them , but as said I only stayed some hours and I must have been very lucky to catch that IL76 as already many spotters told me they missed those beast each time

One thing is sure , I’ll go back for a whole day very soon to Eindhoven and I’ll try to catch one of those (Dutch) transporters and maybe some F16’s 😀

Are you aware that this weekend will be the national “open dagen” for the air force at Volkel? Just half an hour north from Eindhoven up the A50. Weather will probably be crap though.

Thing you should know about EIN is that the air force does not do anything during the weekend. So want to spend a full day here, it better be a working day!

Nice photos! You where lucky with the Il, the RNLAF normally hires another one. At the EWAS forum we have now gone so far as to call it “the RNLAF Il”.

How come everyone that ever goes to EIN comes back with one or two Ilyushins, but everytime I go there the best I can hope for is an Ilyushin parked away at the far end of the field? I am just half an hours drive from there, and in 3 years spotting there only seen 4 Il-76s of which only 2 in the air. And visbility then was low due to fog! I hate karma.

Is the Dutch KC-10 fleet based at Eindhoven too ?

Yes. The entire military transport fleet is based there. Only the royal flight (PH-KBX) is based at AMS.
