My guess would be to limit the stress on the engine. Compare it with shifting down in your car from 5th to 1st gear. Not recommendable, and usually preceded by shifting down to 2nd or 3rd before going into 1st.
Again, just a guess.
Nice photos!
Maybe a dumb question, but why is Air Asia the official low fare airline for Man U, when Air Asia’s nearest destination to MAN is 1000s of KMs away?
Bon Homme can be translated as Good Man or Pretty Man.
As it stands I got nothing to do june 24th. I might be able to drop by. If you contact me around June 20th I will see what I can do.
Kaagbaan is always your best bet. Polderbaan if you intend to rent a car.
To answer my own question, which may help anyone else: I bought a Vosonic VP2160. It’s a very simple tool. Only two buttons are present: power on/off and copy. IF you insert a card (16-in-1 card reader) and press copy, it makes a new directory and duplicates the card to that directory. So any files (not only pictures) will be copied. And with a weight of 230 grams its very light. I bought it for a mere 144 euros.
Got a similar one, albeit the VP-3310. It includes a MP3 player but using it is a sure way of draining batteries. It has no display to show the photos, but considering that a display drains batterries even faster then MP3 that is a good thing!
Typically the battery will last for 2 hours or so. Tranferring a GB will take 20 or so minutes. So typically your battery should last 5 or 6 GBs. The batteries are rechargable so if you bring you charger with you there should be no problem. The size of the hard drive is your own choice. The hard drive is just a standard drive (not sure if it is desktop or laptop standard, my guess is laptop) so can be had in varying sizes and writing speeds.
Awww…
It’s always sad to hear about aviation related accidents, and this time it was 4 planes on the same time. Looks like Armenia was hit hard…too bad to loose much of their expensive Western fleet.
Fortunately for ArmAvia and Armenian AW the planes where leased. Since this fire was beyond their control I would imagine the leasing company would have to provide replacement aircraft (and try to get the money from SN Technic and/or SNT’s insurance company).
The belgian air force has already said it will take over the contracts of the SNT personnel for a brief period while SNT gets its act back together. The belgian air force will use the people to modernise their C-130. The article was not quite clear whether this will be an overhaul of one plane, the whole fleet, or something in between.
Perhaps the belgian air force can buy an old rustbucket from the dessert? At the moment they certainly have enough manpower to give it a proper makeover!
There’s a BBJ3?,i assume it’s based on the 737-900?
The BBJ3 is based on the 757. Not sure if the 739 would be a good candidate for a BBJ conversion, it does not quite have the range that would be expected from a biz jet that size. A 757 is only slightly larger but has much more range.
Last news, NO SN A330 was involved. There is a SN A330 undergoing maintenance, but it is currently at SR Technics in Zurich.
The planes that are involved are:
* Armenian A320 EK-32001
* ArmAvia A320 EK-32010
* Belgian Air Force C-130 CH-02
* Hellas Jet A320 SX-BVB
The ArmAvia is a confirmed write-off. Seen pictures of it at Dutch TV. Long story short, think of the section where the APU is housed… it was lying on the ground. The rest of the plane could not be seen due to concrete and steel lying on it.
The Belgian Air Force C130 is also confirmed written of. The status of the other two is as yet unknown, but considering the hangar collapsed on them it is likely they will be write-offs as well.
Armenia has had a very very bad week. In 3 days loosing 3 of their Airbusses, thats pretty much half the national fleet! ArmAvia did state that the planes are properly insured so hopefully the mess they are in now is only temporary.
Apparantly the planes where undergoing heavy maintenance, so they where on jacks surrounded with scaffolding. Quickly towing them out was not an option.
Nice pics, Peter. I really want to go to AMS again soon.
Hehe. What happened to the Seahawk that said AMS was just over-photographed and you did not want to go here? 😉 😀
Reported in that thread that an A330 of SN was destroyed – will this be immediately replaced, temporarily or permanenty should it be a complete right-off,
Wozza
If that is true it will be a big problem for SN. They are already short on widebodies as it is. Rumours are going around that they are going to get 767s to fill the short term gap, and that was rumoured before the fire!
Excellent Photo’s as usual, what settings did you use?

Hiya Pete,
Been looking at weekdays during mid August as that’s when Jet2 seem to be cheapest :).
16th August for £44 seems to be a good option at the moment, is a Wednesday 🙂
Ooh that’s a shame. I am not available during the week. And when I finally do get my holiday, I intend to spend it outside the mudhole more commonly referred to as the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Colonies. Have always wanted to visit the US and have decided that whatever happens this is going to happen this year.
Now to get a few days of. You would not believe this was my first day off since my MAN trip late november!
Have very nearly booked a flight to AMS a couple of times this week, really MUST get one booked!
When do you intend to go? If it is during the weekend and I got nothing to do I might join you.
Very nice. I’m definitely AMS-bound later this summer.
Cool
Were they taken from the Kaagbaan?
yes
(hope I got that name right)
You did.
You’re right. I found some information on a sub-version, the T.VIIII-W/M. Twelve were ordered for the Dutch East Indies (present day Indonesia). Only nine where delivered though when the war started. The other 3 where completed for the Luftwaffe.
BTW, the planes where not designed as bombers but as torpedo planes. But due to the lack of torpedos when the war started the planes where used as bombers. After the war finished for the Netherlands a few planes where flown over to the UK where they continued the war with RAF 320 (Dutch) sqn. But due to a lack of spares they where replaced by Lockheed Hudsons late 1940.
Some planes had fallen into German hands, and they used them till 1943. The planes still on the production lines (20odd of varying versions including a few intended for Finland) where completed for the Luftwaffe as well.
Herewith ended the history lesson. Class dismissed! 😀
Wasn’t the T9 bomber (which pre-dated the F.24) the first all-metal Fokker?
No, only the forward fuselage, pontoons and part of the wings where metal. The rear fuselage was a wooden frame with linnen and the mid fuselage was wood.
