Anyone knows where to find pictures or videos of the airstrips which are used for the support flights for the Dakar rally? I searched the net but nothing comes up, apart from some old pics at the other site.
Must be a great sight: Antonovs, Herks, ATR’s and the like landing and take off at those dusty desert airstrips.

Sorry, no, I don’t have reg and date on this windmill solution. It was one of those old-days stories people tell you over a cup of coffee during a quiet Sunday morning shift. Just like the same man told me about the load sheets of the Bristol 170, which were “the same size as a newspaper”, a nightmare to calculate and fill in.

Southampton did not have a car loader so the two aircraft were positioned nose to nose and the car transferred.
Now that must have been an interesting sight: two Carvairs positioned nose to nose and a car driving from one into the other!
Obviously some technical problems were handled in creative ways which would be not be acceptable now. One of the older ops officers in the handling company I worked for, was full of stories from the old days. One of them was about a Carvair with a non-functioning starter motor in one of the engines. As this defect could not be repaired at Rotterdam (no spare parts, no licensed mechanic), the captain decided to take-off on three engines, windmill the engine into action, landed back, shut down the three good engines and have the pax boarded quickly with the one faulty engine running, and took off again. Problem solved, everybody happy.

This struck me as a strange fact: as this aircraft was totally destroyed in the sad Biggin Hill crash, why is it still listed as ‘current’ on the register, according to this website?

Talk about low flying: anyone remembers the Russian contraptions called ‘Ekranoplan’? You’ve gotta love those Russian inventions…..

I’m so glad that I have been in the US and did a bit of travelling, before all the mass hysteria and paranoia there… I was there in 1993, 1994 and 2000. But now, I wouldn’t travel there now at gunpoint! It’s becoming worse than a police state.
Not that my country (The Netherlands 😎 ) has no faults… To give you an example: one of the the latest proposals from our PM is: to make it mandatory for kids from 0 to 3 years of age to play with each other. That will be fun, a couple of hours per week being forced to play… Stupid.

Memories: I found these pics of the Airfix Bristol 170 Mk.32 kit. Looking exactly how I remember it. Pity those old kits are no more for sale…
