I make faces (not with my tongue!!! but cast from original type faces) for most Spitfire instruments including 37gal fuel gauge…..you know about my u/c indicators. Also make bezels. Some phots on my website

I would have to do some serious maths to work out the exact forces involved but the weight of the shot combined with the velocity it leaves the barrel would create quite a force pushing backwards on the legs.
When you consider the positioning of the guns on the legs it would have an increased effect on stability a bit like a spanner turning a nut.
I know from using flight sims that firing cannons do slow Spitfires down which is a heavier and more powerful aircraft than a Lysander so there is a considerable force invoked.
It seems to me that some effect would be felt on the stick of a Lysander how much that effect would be would like i say take some working out, however at the very least it would affect sighting of the guns.
It certainly caused some problems as they were not adopted operationally.

They are not particularly big rounds and the effect is very much short term, it would be no worse at effect on the aircraft handling qualities than mild chop……you may get one or two degrees pitch change on a prolonged burst but I seriously doubt it would be anymore…..now a Mollins gun would be a different story!!

Regarding sims, I would not get too wound up on their accuracy if I was you….the whole thing with a gaming sim is to provide cueing that you are doing something. These sims are not always based on the best control and flight aerodynamics laws.

This is good stuff first my comments on flight Sims earlier was meant to Illustrate the point that firing cannons do slow aircraft down I would not suggest a flight sim is any where near accurate it just in my experience when trying to catch an EA where both aircraft are going flat out it firing the guns was not a good idea unless you were guaranteed a kill shot as you lost AS and fell further behind.
Whether they are perfectly accurate in the amount of speed lost is irrelevant, the fact it was factored in as best they could, therefore you would have to accept that it happens.
The calculations made above back this up and are more significant than I would have expected. The fact that these guns are very low down on the UC they would have a levering effect on the fuselage, enough I would think as I previously said to at least badly effect sighting of the Guns.

Have you ever thought of being an aircraft designer Graham?! 😀

Seriously, if noone believes me, maybe this helps:-

I agree, this is very much a worst-case scenario but the total speed loss will remain the same whether it is fired in one long burst (of about 5 seconds) or multiple short bursts with time to accelerate in between.

I don’t think the power of the engine would manage to reduce the speed loss much during firing; acceleration would be poor near the top speed and firing durations are extremely short.

The whole exercise was really to demonstrate that firing these cannon wouldn’t ‘stop the Lysander dead’ but I must admit that I hadn’t realised until I just looked it up that the Lysander was quite so slow with a maximum speed of only 212mph.

dont forget recoil springs….I am just so pleased that there are others with time on their hands 🙂

The recoil springs will not make any real difference as the ‘other’ end of the springs still act on the airframe, slowing it, as the recoiling mass of the cannon returns to its initial position. I don’t think any form of damper was fitted but I could be wrong.

The funny thing was until I was looking for details of the ammunition I hadn’t realised that the 20mm Hispano cannon was gas-operated; I’d assumed (possibly because of the prominent recoil springs on some fighters) that it was a ‘blow-back’ design.

I’m still not sure if the experimental Lysander installation has a muzzle-brake (which will effect the calculation that I made).

Dont agree…but what do I know?! My Hispano has what I think are dampers. The Lysander fit would possibly be Heath-Robinson….some of the best things were/are…I would wager the Lysander would have been a stable gun platform….I have also said that from a pitch point of view, the cannons would not have had a big effect on pitch attitude….but then again what do I know.

    Interesting.

I’m not saying that the cannons would necessarily have affected the pitch of the Lysander to the point that it was unacceptable during firing…

…just that logically it would be better to have them closer to the centre-of-mass surely?

The problems of fitting them anywhere else (in the time available) would probably have outweighed any disadvantage (at that time) and there were advantages, such as being close to the position of the original guns and at a point stressed for bombs.

Goes to show that compromise is the number one law of aviation design.
In an ideal world you would put them where they would cause the least effect on weight, balance, handling….putting them on the centre line (horizontal datum) would be good then you would need interrupter mechanism…they are big, take up loads of room and are heavy….ergo longitudinal CG probs….on the spats/ undercarriage it is strong as you have noticed and also approx below the longitudinal CG so ok thatwise…..
if I have time I will see if we have any reports at work on this fit.

Tim Moore from Skysport acquired (outbid me!) on the fabric Hurri wing that was in Chippenham Scrapyard…maybe he still has it? Say hello to Paul Rogers from me,

many thanx all….sadly TT the light does not penetrate that far down the museum!
sorry the phots are so small….never have much luck setting the right size….hopefully this of the lanc is better……
used my monopod and new Panasonic Lumix….it is tinsy, looks silly on the pod and is not bad for a point and shoot!

Hi Tony , shame that black 6 is in there !! should really be flying!! Well at least with Charlie Brown at the controls or some one as competent !!

    Steve

I tend to agree….DS would be my choice at the controls!
