Hi Droptank,
Can’t believe you have nothing to say about the ‘Iraq Survivor’ thread – check it out.
Yes that would be nice, a picture would be even better. We all love the Mustang (apart form one or two of us). I just hope it is not a TF-51 or we will never hear the end of it.
Now your talking Digby. PS: how did you get on with the info on the little pics?
I for one am going to watch the progress on the Mustang as closely as I can. It certainly reminds me of a few years back when the high back 51 appeared at the last moment and they worked their miracles and it was flying in the show. Someone said that this Mustang (the D model) actually flew in to Duxford so surely it cannot be an impossible task to have it flying for next month. Having said that when I visiting Hangar 2 at the weekend there were an awful lot of pieces missing and lots of wires sprouting from the cockpit so there is obviously still a lot to do. If it is going to be in 78th FG markings I can see someone having their work cut out with all those little black and white squares to set out and mask off. Perhaps it will just fly in bare metal – the important thing is, after all, the fact that it flies (or will fly), it could be painted later in the year.
Maybe we need a virtual Legends – Seafire FR47, Typhoon, Tempest, Mosquito and Hornet. Now I am really dreaming…
I saw him at Legends last year, in the cockpit of the Spitfire 5 with Charlie Brown. Well it looked like that anyway, apparantly he was actually helping Charlie with the parachute straps and harness. I think he would have liked to have been displaying the Spitfire but had to stay on the ground with the rest of us. Maybe things will be different this year, I certainly rate him too.
Andrew,
Not quite the horses mouth I suspect. I imagine that IWM really only know what the organisers in the innards of TFC tell them, there are sure to be one or two surprise items as in previous years. That’s the best thing about Legends.
Well, I certainly cannot wait to see 12 Spitfires flying. This is what makes Legends the best show in Europe for me, that together with the unusual and rare items (hopefully the La-9, CAA permitting). What does everyone else look forward to about this airshow?
Hi Damien B
I dont think these chaps are abrasive. They are entitled to an opinion as much as Snapper is. It is just baffling that anyone interested in warbirds or aviation history would refer to a TF-51 as ‘a waste of sky’. It may not meet with everyones aesthetic requirments but it is far from ‘ugly’. Looks apart, does it not fullfill a very useful role in training todays warbird pilots and giving a bit of an idea about what it must have been like to the rest of us (those that can afford it anyway)?
Good grief!! I have now cancelled your expenses paid courses at Stallion 51.
Lovely but expensive. The WW1 hangars at Duxford are Listed Buildings. To get consent to build a new hangar right in amongst them (within the curtelidge of a listed building/s as English Heritage would say) would almost certainly require it to be a copy of the old hangars, considerably pricier than the steel frame and cladding building HFL/ARCO erected East side.
Dont think so, the runways and stuff are on the ‘live’ side, how do you think the people that work there get in, they certainly dont fly in to work each day (well maybe one or two do)!
Poor AMTV. Flew in her myself once. Hope her prop mends.
Seems to me this sort of monstrosity only serves the ego of architects, he probably made a small fortune out of IWM to boot
Bentwingbomber,
Couldnt agree more about the P47. I thing its a fabulous machine and has looked great for years. A credit to all the chaps at TFC (including the coffee drinkers)!
