Heres the last few for now. The photo shows the Cap 10 about to be blown around a bit. This was a good example of the man who thinks he knows best, ignoring the man with the experience of operating large helicopters with underslung loads. Seconds after I took that photo I realised DX tower had told the Jolly Green to land near the “H”, Its amazing how much notice people take of you when tell them to open their f*****g eyes and look whats happening. It was close.
I´m not 100% sure, but maybe this certain CH-53 Pilot was Maj. Klaus Althoff? He lives 3km from me, retired since the German Army sold his 53 …
Wow, great – thanks!!!
My paperback begins with page 9: “-tions, which streched an expected trip of two days to eleven, a study of our logbooks showed the interesting fact that our time spent in the air – flying time only – exceeded slightly the time of Charles Lindbergh when he made the first solo leap of the Atlantic.”
Messerschmitt 109E-3 wk.nr.1342 , possibly Yellow 8 of 6./JG51
Crashed onto the beach near Cape Blanc Nez , France on 29.07.40 after combat near Dover with F/L Johnny Webster of 41 Sqn. Pilot Fw.Eduard Hemmerling , 3 victories , is classed as MIA … with no known grave .
The wreck remains , consisting of one and a half wings , mainspar, undercarriage legs and some other small parts were recovered in 1988, after being uncovered by a severe storm. 1342 was found stamped on an undercariage leg.
Remanufactured by Craig Charlestone, originally for the AFC, Wanaka, but meant to be going to FHC Seattle.
None of 1342 made it into this machine, including a data plate, as there wasn’t one. It is a new aircraft that incorporates some original 109 parts..but of course from aircraft other than what it is painted to represent.
So it is in the category of the new Oscars, 190s and 262s, although being for Paul Allen , attention to detail is a cut above the rest !
Stunning achievement in its own right.
Ehhhm …. *confused*
So when no part of the wreckage made it into the 109, why made it 1342 into this thread after all? The way I understand it is, the AFC owned it once, and someone else bulit (not rebulit) a new 109. Did they use the remains of 1342 as patterns for the parts?
Don’t forget Duncan Sandys..
Why that?
Looks like he is assembling quite an Air Force out there – he has the B17E also .I once read in Flypast that he will fly his ME 262 with original engines !!!
Optimist. Those engines were manufactured for a very limited lifetime, I think it would be much more safer with the GE-engines, or whatever keeps the replicas going / flying.
I usually paint my early-war RAF-planes with Humbrol-colour: 30 (green) and 29 (brown), sky should be Humbrol 90.
AFAIK, the F104 was actually a Starfighter from the German Luftwaffe. During the Take-off scene you can read the stencils “LT.COL. Heinrich Thuringer” (or so) on the aircraft… When Chuck walked around the F104 some scenes earlier, the pilot´s name was hidden by black tape.
In the final credits they also thank the German Luftwaffe for their support, so I think it was a German Starfighter. The German trainers in the USA all habe to carry USAF-markings due to legal problems. I´ll have to watch my DVD this evening.
Mark, I think Portugal aquired a batch of Mk IIc. Some of those saw action for the filming of “Angels One Five”. 1/48 decal-sheet:
(Or ist yours 72nd scale?)
Just cleaning up …
What are you talking about … ? 😉
