Big or small Alan always had time to help promote aviation museums in the UK; he published one of my first articles in 1979.

I remember him helping to clear the hall for judging at Newark’s first Model Show, everyone certainly moved when told to do so.

I can also recall sitting next to him at a BAPC Meeting and being asked to nudge him when he dropped off to sleep!

Internally XX492 at Newark was fairly gutted when it arrived back in 2004, as shown on the attached pictures.

I know that a lot of work has been done to refurbish XX492 inside and out but I’ve not re-photographed it since 2004.

Have you contacted them to request access to take photographs? They’re normally accommodating. If not PM me an email address and I’ll try to get access and photograph it next time I go to the museum, but that might be for the Aeroboot event they’re holding on November 22nd.

Filmed on September 27th, 2008 I believe; when the Lancaster did a flypast at Newark Air Museum in memory of a 619 Squadron crew of Lancaster ME846, who were having a memorial plaque re-dedicated to them at the museum. [A brief mention in the soundtrack!] 😉

I think Newark have quite a few on display around the full size aircraft.

I believe that most of the models at Newark are radar profiling models that were used by national research establishments to evaluate the effectiveness of ground based radar systems, like the Bloodhound Radar Wagons also displayed at Newark. These models are made of metal and some even had the capability to have mini engines fitted; if you look closely some have ‘stealth modifications’.

I’m not sure which establishment they came from but I believe that some of the ‘Russian’ models have been painted up and are displayed in part of the Cold War building at Cosford.

Well done to all for going through it (its hell!) we havent done it (yet :eek:) lots of paperwork and we really are not big enough to warrant being accredited yet, plus the strings attached to MLA accred are the downside… Newark, Midland, DHM, have all been active for 25+ years at least…our little tin hut has been open for a mere 7….

what you were thinking of twotter old chap is the fact that the little tin hut won Museum of the Year and Best Exhibition at the 2007 Renaissance Heritage Awards:D:D, with an operating budget of zilch.

This year the municipal museums won heavily, rather than the smaller volunteer run types… one having a drawdown budget 10 times that which we have taken in donations since we’ve opened!

Sorry TT, brain addle I’m afraid. I knew that you had won the Renaissance Award, but I thought you had also been ‘accredited’.

As for length of operation, Newark celebrated its 40th Anniversary this year [1968 ’twas formation of company and registering as a charity]; with lots of events and special offers http://www.newarkairmuseum.org/membership.htm

As for funding and awards I know what you mean; Bruce has the correct idea “show me the money!”

Well done Bruce – can you get tablets for it?

Mark V – from my understanding it’s a set of guidelines and ‘minimum standards’ that are tailored to individual museums and may reflect size etc. I am told that it covers such things as:

Collection & Disposal Policies
Emergency Planning
Security Reviews
Forward Plans
Visitor Satisfaction

It’s also vital for securing funding and grants. A bit more here http://www.mla.gov.uk/programmes/accreditation

Mark,

I understood that was the case and from what I hear at Newark, the amount of hard work is precisely the reason they have made the announcement of their proud achievement.

I seem to remember from last year something about Sywell – perhaps TT can confirm?

Lots of aviation films and programmes on the cable channels – several production companies have filmed at Newark over the years, subjects included:

Cold War
Transport
Berlin Airlift
V-Force
Christmas Island Tests etc

Even BBC2 did quite a piece [last year I think] about Hornbys take over of Airfix and they included a slot on the Canberra PR7 at Newark c/w Tornado flypast.
