Slightly off thread, for Dragon Rapide, there is a good book on a Lancaster crew that flew from Mepal with 75 Squadron “Luck And A Lancaster” by Harry Yates,DFC,Airlife 1999. There is a site map of Mepal airfield at the back of the book, and a picture of the now demolished control tower.

The aircraft would have been delivered in yellow T bands ,this scheme ran to about mid-1959 when the dayglo paint appeared ,this covered the cowling, wingtips, the rear fuselage and tailplanes. Rarely were control surfaces painted for fear of upsetting the control balance due to the extra weight of paint.Around 1962 the strips of dayglo started to appear on natural metal ,light grey appearing from 1966.

WP784 was delivered to the RAF on 18.6.52 and served with 17 Reserve Flying School at Hornchurch,5 Reserve Flying School at Castle Bromwich,Air Attache,Paris,Queens University Air Squadron at Sydenham,Manchester University Air Squadron Woodvale,8 FTS at Swinderby,Aberdeen UAS Dyce,Leeds UAS Church Fenton. SOC 21.6.72

I remember this picture adorned many aircrew walls as a flight safety poster and often appeared in “Air Clues” the RAF Flight safety magazine. Do you remember Wing Commander Spry ?

I had justed started work at Britannia Airways Operations at Luton airport in September 1974. After a 12 hour day shift the Ops manager asked for volunteers to go to Genoa to offload and load the baggage as the Italian handlers had gone on strike. We set off in Boeing 737 G-BAZH on the flight deck for the one hour fifty minute flight . At Genoa we completed the unloading /loading in turn round time despite an armed guard watching over us.
It was a full moon and at midnight on my 21st birthday we had just passed Mount Blanc which with the snow on its peaks looked like daylight. The captain even offered me a drink and I had a large G& T to celebrate . The crew looked after us and the passengers were very grateful too. A very memorable 21st,no way today sadly, its all got too serious !

The book “Aviation in Birmingham” by Geoffrey Negus and Tommy Staddon,Midland Counties Publications 1984 has a list of No 5 Reserve Flying School aircraft . WP784 is shown as coded “E”. The RAF Museum archives will hold the record card for this aircraft and may be able to help with AP Manuals for the paint scheme . Scale Aircraft Modelling Vol 13 No 9 June 1991 has many side profiles of all the RAF Chipmunk schemes.

Nice atmospheric shots, The airfield was used as a drop zone by Halifaxes from Syerston 11/45 to 7/47. Also Spitalgate used it as a relief landing ground from 1946 to early 48 then Cranwell till 1949. An Open day was held on 8/5/46 and the Lancaster “Aries” visited 10/8/46. The last Oxfords used by No 1515 BAT flight left 11/11/46 to Spitalgate.
In 1959 to May 1963 it was a Thor missile site No 142 Squadron, under Hemswells control.

Sentiments aside this B-17G flew 5 missions with the 351st from Polebrook and then transferred to the 305th BG at Chelveston in 1945 . It is a real 8th Air Force machine and deserves all the attention it can get. I do hope it will not be grounded permanently.

Belated many thanks to everybodys replies and a big thank you to Duxman for the photograph but I am convinced the photograph was taken in South Africa not Bourn ? Pest Control was formed by Sir Guy Marshall and Dr Walter Ripper originally setting up offices in a disused garage near Hauxton Mill. Later in approx 1953/4 the company was taken over by Fisons. Dr Ripper was killed flying 21 March 1965 from Athens to Naples at age 57 in Cherokee G-ASLM . He operated Ripper Robots based at Cranfield operating Piper Pawnees for work in the Sudan .
