Moggy, Was he with the 48th TFW at Lakenheath or 20 TFW at Wethersfield. I bet he did a tour in Vietnam ?
TSR-2 ?
The Group were based at La Senia,Algeria but moved around Tunis as well. Perhaps they were on a mapping/shopping mission to Egypt or may have been a meeting at high level (Operation Torch ?)
It was probably Elliott meeting his father in Cairo. http://www.info.dfat.gov.au/info/historical/HistDocs.nsf/vVolume/834A9F0BC9913EAFCA256B7E001E3F3B
pm your address, I have an old Scale Aircraft Modelling magazine showing all of the FTS schemes on Jet Provosts.
Lt. Col Elliott Roosevelt was Commanding Officer of the 3rd Photographic Group operating F-4/5 Lightnings and the 15 Photo Mapping Squadron using B-17’s assigned to the 12th Air Force. The Fortresse’s were used from Nov 1942 for one year . I claim that I think this is plausible to the story.
The Air Navigation Order say’s it is illegal to be drunk on an aircraft. Print this in big letters in the holiday brochures and huge billboards in the terminals. Stop people tanking up before boarding in the terminals. They are putting other peoples lives at risk in an emergency. Time to get tough, common sense before commercial gain. The Spanair disaster woke everyone up to what can go wrong so quickly.
Went to Duxford in July and alot of school parties visiting fairly well behaved. I only wish that my teachers had organised trips like this then ,but in the sixties there were not that many museums. The youngsters are spoilt for choice these days and still abuse the system. Is it a case of overload or is World War 2 air war being taught properly in schools ?? Hardly anybody knows or cares what day Battle of Britain day is in this country, which is shameful as this country depended on those Battle of Britain (mainly)NCO pilots.
If you catch the culprits I’am for a public birching and then they won’t be able to sit on the bench’s !! Get tough
RAF airmen’s uniform beret’s were used for Hunter starting with AVPIN and you could tell by all these blackened berets ! Could anyone elaborate on this one as I do not know how the starter system worked ?
East Kirkby already established would be ideal. Lots of room and attracting all the seaside visitors in the summer. It’s proximity to Coningsby attracts the BBMF flying in the local area.
Spitfire F.24 VN324 flown by Guy Morgan ?
Sorry to hear that. His Fleet Air arm books are superb and “The History of Britain’s Military Training Aircraft”. He wrote some fine articles in Aviation News on serial/code letters which are still a boon in research today.
Another Halifax MZ765 of 51 Squadron came down on the 16th fairway at Mannings Heath golf course 17.2.45. The starboard inner engine had caught fire and 5 baled out but sadly the pilot and bomb aimer didn’t get out in time. Auster spotter planes landed on the 18th fairway. There was a large crater and huge full grown oak trees were scattered like matchsticks onto the second and third fairways.
Very sad loss and highlights the sacrifice these young chaps made.
Pat Burgess and Andy Saunders wrote 3 excellent books on the Air war over Sussex, published by the Middleton Press in Midhurst circa 1990 -95.
Battle over Sussex 1940 ISBN 0-906520-79-7
Blitz over Sussex 1941-2
Bombers over Sussex 1943-45 ISBN 1-873793-510
