The black and yellow checks belong to No 63 Squadron at RAF Waterbeach and the aircraft code is “C”. I narrow this down to WK942 which ended up as a U.16 drone at RAE Llanbedr and was scrapped in 1962 . Llanbedr is fairly close to Sennybridge. Can anybody back this identification up ?

The AAIB report is EW/C717 Feb 1981. I still have a nice letter Don Bullock sent to me inviting me to view Sally B,when Euroworld were just starting to organise operating the B-17. He was an experienced and enthusiastic pilot and is not here to defend himself. I maintain that some distraction during the roll caused loss of airspeed. That’s all I am prepared to say on this sad matter.

The Marlborough team were most likely Brian Lecomber and Phil Meeson.

Thanks for that . I was very lucky to go on a visit of RAF Alconbury in 1989 and sat in the cockpit of TR-1 80-1079 courtesy of the pilot Brian Long. I also remember sitting at the end of the runway and watching take-offs and landings, until i saw a USAF police car approaching and ran for it !! but that’s another story !!

Regular USAF users of Greenham in the eightie’s were 58MAS CT-39A(Sabreliner) 24461,24462,24471,24474,10654,03483. C-12A 60166 and 31216. Also visits by C-9A 10878 and 10882 of the 435 TAW. It is most probable that a C-12A was the last movement. Since closure gliders and tugs may have used it since.

My earliest recollection of an airfield memorial was about 1964 at RAF Kelstern,Lincolnshire. Was this the first ?
