“Propliner” magazine Nos 103,105,107 and 110 are on the history of Southampton airport in the sixties ,and some earlier issues. Very good photo’s and history of the era including Bristol Freighters there.

Yes Blue Robin, but the whole idea was for viewers to scroll down and read about vintage aeromodelling as well ! Any way thanks for including it. It brings back memories of my PPL training there in 1979/80 with the great CFI Paul Smith.

For anyone interested the Lancaster was LM175 of 1656HCU Lindholme. It was last heard of in the Shrewsbury area ,and was classed as missing on a navigation exercise. It was originally with No 100 Squadron at Waltham as HW:D from 22/6/44 to 02/11/44 before delivery to the HCU(Heavy Conversion Unit).
I am wondering if the wartime RAF recovery unit did not find it’s crash location and were not aware of where it came down ?

Cranfield Institute library hold all copies of “Flight” International and the old “Aeroplane” magazine. It is open to the public but you have to pay a hefty subscription to join.

7 FTS was at Valley and became 4 FTS on 14.8.60. It seems this Vampire spent most of it’s working life there.

Ernest Gann died on 19.12.91 and is sadly missed. His last book was “Black Watch” about the TR-1,and he did visit RAF Alconbury in the spring of 1989 to do research on the 95th Recon Squadron. “Fate is the Hunter” is essential reading for wannabee flightdeck candidates.

Another good Chipmunk book is “Around the World at 90 Knots” by Squadron Leader Bill Purchase MBE.Published April 2000. Interesting tale of the three Chipmunks flying around the world.

Yes,it is sad about the loss of football players, but there has been very little mention of the aircrew in the media, particularly the struggle of many years for Captain Thain,to be cleared of blame. The accident was due to aqua-planing on slush. Tests were done at RAE Bedford using a Dan-Air Ambassador as part of the investigation some years later ?

The SCBS at Scampton, had the following Hastings:
    TG505(St Athan),TG511(To Cosford 16/8/77)TG553(Fairford dump)TG568(Bedford dump)TG503(Gatow Museum 29/6/77)TG517(Newark Air Museum 22/6/77)TG536(Catterick dump).

RAE Farnborough used C.2 WD480 till it’s last flight 31/8/74.WD499 of the RRE Pershore was retired 29/9/74. I can remember seeing both these machines parked weekending at RAE Bedford 1973/4.

Boscombe retired their Hastings in 1972, TG500 and TG502 both having Argosy type thimble noses and WD496.

The remains of TG568 at Bedford went into the rebuild of the Elvington Museum Halifax 3.
