Thanks again, great photo’s! Love the sunset shot on the grass, great Spit pic too. 🙂
My feelings are mixed about this, a Havoc/Boston variant of some sort would be very welcome in the UK and I was very pleased to hear about BigNig coming to RAFM, so on the one hand it’s a disappointment. On the other hand it’s a USAAF A20G and Pima is a great home for it; I can imagine they’re pleased as punch to have it. It will at least finally be on public display somewhere.
Quite an adventure in a Storch, although I’m guessing not as thirsty as it would be with an Argus! What is the replacement engine?
An interesting thread, please post more!
ZRX: Perhaps he was talking about a Hurri with a four-blade prop? I’ve heard the prop vortex hits the tail in the wrong way and affects the stability and handling.
Lovely pics as always.
It’s perhaps worth pointing out that according to figures from the last few years, Cosford IS the main RAF Museum already – annual visitor numbers at Cosford are higher than for Hendon, a strange situation given the latter’s London location. Perhaps this will change with the extra publicity of the Centenary and the new galleries etc, but it does perhaps explain why the RAFM have gone down what some call the “funfair” route to attract more London visitors.
Haven’t seen it for myself yet, hope to in the next few days.
Great addition to the museum, and very appropriate given the use of Tangmere, Appledrum etc for SOE work.
Haven’t been to Tangmere for a couple of years and I’m trying to work out where the Lysander has been slotted in. Seems the speed record Meteor has been moved to make way for it?
An interesting proposal and one that would bring Hatfield pretty much back full circle, given the airfield’s humble beginnings as a civilian club aerodrome. It’s not often we see new UK airfields opening up, especially on such a historic site.
Looks rather like a Junkers G.24, with some Neiuport Nighthawks and a Potez 25 in the background.
WL747,
Please click the following link for several images of ‘TIGE’ which show her displayed in Bristow colours. Appears she was roaded to IHM from Norwich, a bit of a drive!

Apologies for the thread hijack, that tailboom for ‘208 looks to be in great condition.
WL747,
You’ll be glad to know there’s a civil ex-Aberdeen Super Puma (G-TIGE) preserved at the Helicopter Museum, W&R lists it as arriving in 2015.
Great news about XW208!
Signed!
As others above have said, it’s not the medal itself that is important but the recognition that it brings. This in turn can hopefully be used to lever compensation and pensions etc from the UK government, which are long overdue. The situation as it stands is absolute madness, veterans in Aus and NZ have already been recognised and it’s just slack and neglectful of the UK gov not to have done the same.
Put simply, wow!! She will be an amazing achievement when she flies, hard to believe she started out as a wreck on a Swedish mountain.
The super-matt finish on the Defiant is probably what makes it look a little bit two-dimensional, but it is accurate. The RAF tried to use this new type of extra matt Night Finish from 1940-1942 but it was found to wear down quickly into a semi-matt in many places (hence the very scrappy looking finishes seen in some archive pics). It also affected performance, and was withdrawn in favour of a more conventional paint.
Lovely to see the Defiant out in the sun, I’m guessing she would have got quite hot to the touch in some places.
My only question about the paintjob would be the later style fin-flash with the early roundels. Knowing the reputation of MAPS, I’m guessing this is unusual but accurate?
As I’ve heard it, the Swift had a lot of type-specific components which were very difficult to source for the airworthy restoration. F.7’s were built in very small numbers and there can’t have been many spares set aside for the fleet, such as it was. Add to that it used reheat, which is usually pretty unpopular with the CAA.
It’s interesting to see how the tables have turned regards XF114 and WK275, it used to be ‘275’s condition that drew comment.
In what seems like a rather amazing coincidence, I posted another example (or is it the same one scrubbed up??) on the forum yesterday. No positive ID as yet. See here:
