..compared with LF363,currently wearing the colours of the same squadron from the same period…

    Cheers Flood,just the stuff I was looking for,and a bit more! lol
Does anyone know where I can find a colour sample chart for these colours on the web?I’ve been looking but can’t find anything decent.
I have to admit that the wording of my email to the guy was a little ‘in your face’,as he put it,but I was pretty hot under the collar after seeing that paintjob for the first time.I also sent it to CAf Headquarters, rather than the owner himself, and I didn’t realise they’d forward it to the guy. It’s not the Wildcat on it’s own,it’s that added to things like the David Price Hurricane which combine to drive me nuts!lol I had hoped that these rather whacky American applied British schemes were a thing of the past, but it appears not.
Just to prove a point, here’s the former G-ORGI which is now on loan to the CAF…

I should seriously apologise for misnaming the guy who was killed in the making of Flight of the Pheonix. It was Paul Mantz, rather than the Tallmantz chap I referred to earlier.I was relying on my grey matter, which becomes an incresingly bad idea as the day wears on.Sorry folks.

Being a bit pedantic here I know, but I believe TB683 is currently fitted with an RR Merlin, making her technically a Mk.IX.

Thanks for the info on the Buchon rudder design Olivier.Just to correct Mike Currill, the Avia S.199 Mezek was powered by a Junkers Jumo, rather than an engine built by Avia themselves. The Czechs had built a number of single and two seaters with original DB605’s,calling them S.99’s.When they ran out of DB’s,they resorted to the Jumo and renamed it the S.199.Ironic to think the 109 started it’s combat career under the Swastika and ended it under the Star of David.
With regard to the O47 used in Flight of the Pheonix,I think the accident it suffered a few decades ago was the one which occurred during filming, killing the highly respected Hollywood pilot Frank Tallmantz. The aircraft crashed on what should have been the triumphant landing sequence for the film,so the film doesn’t show the aircraft landing. If I remember rightly, the movie was dedicated to Frank Tallmantz.

Brilliant idea Steve,I’d go along with that!I’ll probably get shot down in flames for this, but I think the Lancastrian makes the Lancaster look like an ugly duckling!
As for which particular example,I think I’d have it finished in BSAA colours.Would be nice to think that it could be fitted out with a passenger carrying cabin which met modern requirements and make flights avaialble in her, that’d put a smile on a few people’s faces! ( The face of one Welshman in particular! :D)

    BUMP!

Managed to see the flying boat programme on Ch4,was much better than I’d thought it would be,well written and with some excellent archive footage. The colour film of that Boeing Clipper was awesome!

“The top of the rudder is an aluminium welded capping that also helps to trim out the rudder due to the engine torque by being constructed off set, but, because the DB & the Merlin turn the prop in opposite directions then the rudder is not interchangeable between the two!”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t both the DB and the Merlin right-handed?Why would they need to switch round the the aerofoil of the fin and rudder??

Both Tempests which were with Autokraft are now with Tempest Two at Gainsborough in Lincs. The one that’s close to flight is MW763 G-TEMT,the one Autokraft had made most progress with when they sold up.The other,HA604,is in storage until this first one is complete, and I believe it hasn’t been touched since it was recovered from India,so plenty to do!Tempest Two also have a Harvard and a Moraine MS.315 on the go,and a couple of IL-2 Sturmovics are in storage pending restoration, one atleast to flying condition,or atleast that was the plan a few months ago. Quite a busy bunch of blokes!

I think the projected date for completion was a bit optimistic there! The Widow is a complex beast and the last I heard a few months back the fuselage was still in the jigs, with some fitting out of equipment being started on.I haven’t heard anything officially about how long she’ll take, but another couple of years wouldn’t surprise me.

I can’t believe it was four years ago.I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m still having trouble with the realisation that he is gone from us.Somehow I still expect him to be there strolling down the flightline at Duxford shows, pre flighting the Hunter or walking round the Spit. You never know, perhaps he still does.
RIP Mark Hanna, gone but most certainly not forgotten.

Thanks for your advice on the London Gazette chaps,I’d already been told the same by Kev35 last week.Unfortunately,I’ve looked there and he’s not mentioned for whatever reason. One of my more distant family did a bit of family tree research, and I’m told he managed to unearth a citation of some sort,so hopefully I’ll be able to find out something via that route.
