IMHO it would be a good idea to move the Valiant to Cosford as it would mean displaying complete examples of all three V-Bombers in one place.I know there’s a Victor cockpit at Hendon but that’s not quite the same.
Who knows,if they moved the Valiant perhaps they’d have room to accomodate a certain Beverley?? I know they chopped up the last one,but with a roof over it’s head it’s future would be secure. I can’t see any other museum being able to house it.

“Good idea Ant, anything that can raise the profile of the BoB is worth doing. Do you have a link to the prog that can be posted on this thread?”

Agh!Meant to put that on my last post, thanks Geoff.

“How about the theme from the Battle of Britain followed by ‘Hymn to the Fallen’, just to put it all into perspective.”

Nice idea Kev.I was thinking we needn’t neccesarily all vote for the same piece (would look a little suspect!),we just choose what we each fancy hearing. The wider the variation of our requests the more chance there is of playing something on the right theme, and they do seem to have a thing at the moment for playing things from Band of Brothers or Private Ryan.
My choise is ‘The Battle of Britain Theme-End Title’,the longer orchestral version which the film closes with-for me it’s both a reflective and a powerful piece.
I was thinking it might also be helpful to make a mention in your requests of any BofB veterans whom you know, the people who select what tunes to play seem to like requests with a personal touch and I’d also like to think that it would mean alot the person you dedicate it to,I know alot of folks of that older generation often wonder whether anybody of the younger generations care-would be nice to prove we do.:)

This is the F.53 on display at Tangmere. She’s marked up as ‘XR753’,a 23Sqn F.6.She is in fact ZF578.Despite having her wings and tailfin cut through for transport, she’s in excellent nick all round-you could eat your dinner off her undercart bays!
The real XR753 is currently kept at RAF Leeming, and I think is looked after by the current 23Sqn.
Guzziniel, open your image in windows’ paintbrush program and shrink the pic by 50%,then save it under a different name. That way you get the original piccy and a smaller piccy that’s lost no detail but has a lower resolution and so takes up less kb.Should go down to something like 60 or 70kb.

I’ve been thinking for a few weeks how we can best comemorate BofB Day and I had an idea.Whether it’s a good idea or a crap one I’m not sure, but I thought I’d suggest it all the same…
I thought it might be a good idea to try and get something mentioned in the media about the anniversary. It would be good to get something in the papers or on the telly, but I can’t think how we’d do that.Instead,I was thinking we might get summat played on the radio.
Classic FM have a thing called ‘Lunchtime Requests’ on weekdays, where listeners email the show to ask for a particular piece of music.I listen to it occasionally and they play a huge variety of music for a variety of reasons. It seems to help if a number of listeners ask for the same or similar piece.I was thinking that if a number of us forum folk wrote to them asking for something on a Battle of Britain theme, then they might play something like the Battle of Britain theme or the theme of the Royal Air Force or something along those lines. The show has a large audience with a wide age range and I thought it would be just the place to get the Battle of Britain’s profile raised.I think it’s important that the BofB anniversary doesn’t go unmentioned in the media.
    Lemme know what you think…

My thinking is that FAST do not have limitless resouces or display space.Lightnings are big beasties and it would take up an awful lot of FAST’s space to have two in thier care.I’d like to be proved wrong ofcourse, but I just don’t see how they’d have room for a second one.

From memory, the roundabout near Farnborough that the Lightning was planned to go in is the one which now has the Gloster Whittle FSM displayed on it.Add to this the loan of Murray Flint’s T.5 Lightning and it seems increasingly unlikely that XM172 will find her way to Farnborough. 🙁
I remember seeing that Hunter when she was displayed at Tangmere a few years ago and thinking even then that she couldn’t look much sorryer-Joe’s pic proves me wrong!

    Hi Colin,
It might be an idea to get in touch with the guys at HP57 Rescue, the group of enthusiasts who collect Halifax bits for trade or donation to various restorers. They’ve done an awful lot of parts hunting for the NA337 project over in Canada,to name just one project they’ve been involved with.

Erm…perhaps I need my eyes checked, but where is this ‘Firefly’ looking thing everyone is talking about?I can see Avengers and Corsairs, but nothing else. It would be strange as there weren’t usually more than two types operating from one BPF carrier, usually a strike squadron with Avengers/Barracudas and a fighter squadron with either Firefly,Corsair,Seafire or Hellcat.
Relying on my grey matter (which is all too often a bad idea!) I think the ship may be HMS Illustrious. As far as I can remember she was the only BPF carrier with a combination of Corsair and Avenger, others being Avenger/Firefly,Corsair/Barracuda etc.

I suppose it depends on your definition of ‘best’,whether it’s to do with how complete or how well looked after it is.It’s probably true that the Hendon Vulcan has the most certain future and is probably the most corrosion free, even if it isn’t 100% complete.
The example at the North East Air Museum is pretty much 100% complete, but it’s outdoors in mildly salty air and is therefore in a sorry state.I’d therefore say that ‘best’ has to be judged more on the aircraft’s long term prospects, and that means going for the one at Hendon, with the Duxford example a close second.

Beautiful shot Roger. 🙂 I always wonder about the wisdom of Junkers’ corrugated construction-surely the aerodynamic penalty was greater than the saving in structural wieght??

Might be at DX on Sunday,or possibly OW depending on the weather. If it looks like being too breezy for alot of the Shuttleworth stuff I’ll be at DX.
Is there anywhere in particular forum folk are meeting up?

Thanks for clearing that up-that last pic of AI-L is definately the one I was talking about, although the pic I saw was a colour and taken from the stbd side.Didn’t realise they’d pranged more than one Spit like that-wonder what the props cost to replace in those days??
Anyone know what’s happenning with TE384 these days?Last I heard she was grounded/stored with an owner in the US.
I’m intrigued as to how the low-backed versions were made into high-backs.I presume they built some sort of fairing to raise the profile of the fuselage spine, but I very much doubt that this could’ve been deemed an airworthy mod-were any of the low-backs flown as high backs??

“In fact that would be an interesting bit of research. I wonder who was the most unsuccessful pilot of WW2 i.e. who was shot down the most times without being killed. Bet someone knows the answer…”

Just off the top of my head,I remeber Jackie Mann, the Battle of Britain Spitfire pilot and later a Beirut hostage was shot down no less than six times, being very badly burnt on one occasion after gliding his burning Spit most of the way across the Channel before belly landing.Six times must come pretty close to a record, atleast for a British pilot.I seem to remember Hans-Ulrich Rudel, the highly decorated Ju87 pilot was shot down more times than even this, but not certain of the total.
Good luck with the servicability of the Me108 Simon, look forward to seeing her sometime soon. 🙂
