    RE: 262 flying pics

Thanks for the link Munnst. There’s also a good feature on the first flights in the Feb issue of Aeroplane.

RE: Time For A Lockheed Electra Junior ?

I’d agree with you there David. His original machine,G-AFTL(?),is still in existance and is kept in airworthy condition in the US.Aeroplane reported her as being up for sale a few months ago,and the owner was looking to sell her back to a collector or museum in the UK because of the significance of it’s European history.Although a new interior and slightly different engines were fitted recently,a number of her original recce mods remain, including the mounts and apertures for the belly cameras.
The only problem is that she’s being offered at an airworthy price,so I’m guessing it would be a bit beyond RAFM’s price range.

RE: Is Bristol Britannia G-AOVS still at Luton Airport ?

    Hi folks,
I finally managed to find a couple of pics of G-AOVS when she was in service with Redcoat.

RE: Brighton Pier is falling down

    Hi Keltic,
According to some reports,a section of Brighton pier has collapsed, not the whole thing, although it’s all looking a bit creaky. There is a band of enthusiasts who do thier best to look after things, and they have vowed to raise the cash to get the pier sorted, even restoring and rebuilding the bits that recently fell in.I certainly hope they do.Sounds like a sound case for a lottery grant application if you ask me.Whatever they decide to do,it won’t be cheap!

Thanks for the pic Damien.Part of me is glad to see it still survives, and the other wants to see it put out of it’s misery asap!
While it’s nice to think she could be turned into some sort of walkthrough exhibit, she looks too far gone to me.She also has some serious damage around the nose which probably rules out any plan to save the cockpit.

    RE: What was it ?

While we’re on the subject of mysterious movie planes,a week or two ago I watched a 1970’s film called Shout at the Devil, starring Roger Moore and Lee Marvin amongst others.Set in 1914,the plot was the discovery and sinking of a German battleship on the eve of WW1.They used some sort of ‘pusher’ biplane, summat like a DH2 or an FB5 Gunbus, but it wasn’t either of those precisely.I’d say it more closely resembled an FB5 than anything else, but the fuselage pod wasn’t anything like the right design.I’m guessing it was a kind of pastiche replica rather than something original.Anyone have any ideas what it was, when it was built, what happenned to it etc?
I’ve managed to find a promotional pic which includes the plane, although it’s pretty sketchy in terms of detail,it’s the best I can do.

Hmmmmmm…well I didn’t realise it was gonna be the kids’ version of the show, but there was some good stuff all the same, the collection of Bader related bit’s n’ pieces was probably the most interesting for me.

Just thought I’d add one or two pics of Redcoat Britannias to give an idea of how G-AOVS would’ve looked when she was retired.Redcoat Britannias had either a white tail with red lettering,or a red tail with white lettering,so I’m not sure which ‘AOVS would’ve had.I’ve also managed to find an early pic of G-AOVS while she was flown by IAS.

RE: Is Bristol Britannia G-AOVS still at Luton Airport ?

    Hi Andy,
I suppose there’s a chance that there may be some interior fittings etc which might be of use to other examples, but generally the interiors of these training aids get trashed in the course of being used in fire and rescue training.G-AOVS was last operated by Redcoat (whose union jack emblem can just be seen in the photo.)If I remember rightly, they were a frieght carrier,so there wouldn’t be much in the way of seats, luggage racks etc to recover anyway.

RE: Is Bristol Britannia G-AOVS still at Luton Airport ?

    Hi Andy,
The most recent edition of Wrecks & Relics states that G-AOVS is still at Luton and still serves as a training aid for fire crews.Whether you can really call it a Britannia anymore is open to debate as it’s generally in very poor condition. She last flew in the late 70’s and has been used as an outdoor training aid for many years.
This latest edition of W&R was published about a year ago now,so I suppose a move or scrapping since the book was printed can’t be ruled out.To look at her,I’d say she’s begging for the axe to put her out of her misery.

    RE: My Bad Day

Don’t worry about it Andrew mate.Just coz some half witted, screwed up f*ckers steal stuff from before your eyes,it shouldn’t be taken out on you.Petty crime winds me up no end!
I was having a perfectly good day up until about half an hour ago when I went out to have a look at summat on the car and found that some little scroat had ripped the nearside mirror off!I even saw the guy who did it hanging around the car a few minutes before, but didn’t twig what he’d done,or was about to do.The thing is,what could I have done even if I’d known?Go out there and beat the living…daylights out of him??It might be what you feel like doing, but you’d be the one ending up down the nick.It seems too petty to report to the police, and how long would it take them to get here?Does it help this guy’s future to report him?If he’s already stupid/desperate/idiotic enough to do what he’s done, then you ought to feel soprry for him.All in all,I can’t see anything I could’ve done about it.
We have alot of vandalism, car torching, and general petty crime from kids who dunno what to do with themselves.I’m worried there’ll come a day when I’ll do summat I later regret. It seems stupid that this kind of thing can happen and that there is nothing you can do to either punish the people who do it or prevent them from doing it in the first place. The pettiness of it makes it so irritating! Why do they bother in the first place??Why should we have to pick up the repair bills for summat that was pointless in the first place??Daft, irritating and there’s nowt you can do about it…

    Sorry folks,you can come out now,rant over…

    RE: RAFM Shackleton MR.3/3

    [updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-12-02 AT 08:10 PM (GMT)]Hi Andy,
From the pictures of the repaint that I’ve seen, the Shack was done by brushwork, although I guess they may have sprayed some of it.The pictures showed volounteers wielding dirty great foot-wide household decorating brushes.
From one pic of the YAM Victor repaint,it seems she was largely sprayed, with alot of tarpaulins and masking in place. The result was well worth the effort in both cases! 🙂
Dunno what was used on the Victor at Brunty though.
