    RE: FW-190 584219

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-11-02 AT 00:03 AM (GMT)]Hi Kiethmac, some interesting pics, thanks for putting them up :). Is it true that she used to have her engine run occasionally whilst she was at St Athan?I read somewhere that it was,but the exhaust outlets in your pictures look too clean for this to be so.
I’m wondering why she was converted from a close support F model rather than one of the standard A fighter versions.Surely in the last months of the war the Luftwaffe were desperate for close support aircraft,so why take this one out of the frontline?
I have to say I think I agree with you about her appearance. That second seat certainly doesn’t do her any favours.
Thanks again for putting them up,it would certainly be good to see any others you felt like posting 🙂

Thanks for putting that lot up Snapper, sounds like it was a pretty fierce encounter. Were any decorations recommended as a result of this action? It certainly sounds as though Polek would have been deserving of something for his skill and tenacity.

Hi Roger, thanks for the pics.I don’t know if I’m in a minority, but I think I preferred the Brabant Mitchell in those 2nd TAF D-Day colours as opposed to her present Dutch East Indies paint job.Does anyone know why she is/was always so smokey? She always seem to chuff alot more of the blue stuff than Grumpy.

I got the picture from an article written by Mark himself about flying the Rata on the Alpine Fighter Collection’s web-site.I would guess that if you want to be sure about copyright etc,you could email them.

RE: Airmans ghost in squadron picture.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-11-02 AT 02:52 PM (GMT)]Being as there aren’t any records of RAF squadrons at Drem in the time in question,is it possible that this group are from a Royal Navy squadron or perhaps a mixed unit?A number of the chaps in the picture seem to be wearing Naval uniform.Just a thought.
With regard to the location of the man’s funeral,is it possible that he was exhumed and reburied at the present location at a later date?

    RE: THAT scheme…

The problem I have with the RAFM’s plans for the Tempest is that I don’t see what a target tug Tempest has to do with the Milestone of Flight theme.True, the Tempest is/was an awesome beast, but does it really have a place within this building??
IMHO it would be a better idea to get the RAFM’s Hunter prototype and record breaking Meteor from Tangmere and swap them for the Tempest and/or something else that would be appropriate to Tangmere.Anything other than dangling the poor old Tempest from the cieling!!

I think there is a limit on the size of the file,I think somewhere around 75Kb.You could try putting it thru the Windows paintbrush program and downsizing it a bit.Alternatively, you could try putting it up as a HTML file rather than a jpeg, which might bypass the size limit.

Nice picture Roger, thanks for putting it up.The UK registered Falcon is G-AEEG,an M.3A model, but to be honest I can’t tell the difference between the two.

    RE: TV ‘Heads Up’

I agree with Moggy, the series has been good so far and seems to be developing nicely.Seeing that the Spit in last night’s trailer was MH434,it’s no wonder she was looking so shiny.Methinkes there may have been a feather boa involved somewhere…
I could be wrong, but I thought I also caught a glimpse of the late Martin Sargeant’s PR.XI aswell.Over a year on and I still can’t belive that he and that beautiful Spit are gone.
Getting back to the subject of totty,Sam’s character and looks strangely remind me of contemporary pictures of Princess Elizabeth the future Queen,so I’m afraid it rather affects my judgement in the looks department, but she certainly plays the role well.

    RE: Hemswell

    Hi Philo,
You’ll be glad to hear that all three of these machines are still at Hemswell in the care of the Bomber County Aviation Museum.
Wrecks and Relics lists the collection as:

    Canberra T.19 WJ975
    Piston Provost WW388
    DH Vampire T.11 XD445
    Hunter
    Lightning F.1A XM192
    Jet Provost T.4 XP557
    Lightning F.3 XP706
    Dassault Mystere IVa 101/’8-MN’

As your piccy shows, the Hunter is a composite of various bits, the grey-painted nose section coming from PR.11 WT741,and most of the rest coming from XG195,an FGA.9.She’s been rebuilt to FGA.9 standard, but she’s painted up as XG193,an F.6 of the Black Arrows team.
On the down side, all the airframes are displayed outdoors and so a number of them are looking rather faded and worn, with plenty of lichen thrown in for good measure. The recent piccy in Wrecks and Relics shows the Mystere certainly looking very green.

RE: RE Kennet’s New Base ?

Thanks for those Yakrider, some very nice shots mate 🙂 This month’s Aeroplane Monthly has an excellent feature on flying the Gnat with some beautiful air to air shots of G-RORI in her new 1970’s training colours (as opposed to the black/red flames pattern she wore until recently-ergh!!)One thing in this article I am dubious about is that it states that the undercart double as the airbrakes, whereas I always believed it was just the mainwheel doors.Does anyone know which is true?

    RE: Lancaster KB976

This month’s Flypast has a section on the Fantasy of Flight Museum, and it mentions that the Lanc is visible in one of the workshop/storage hangars on the site.It doesn’t say whether or not there is any work being carried out at the moment though.
