RE: New Pic
Thanks for the picture Michelle.Whilst on the subject of P38’s,the Confederate/Comemmorative Air Force have just purchased an airworthy P38L.To finance the deal they had to sell off thier P82 TwinMustang project, and also the wreckage of ScatterbrainKidII,thier DroopSnoot configured Lightning which force landed after engine failure a few years ago.
Thier new machine is P38L N5596V,previously owned by David Price in Santa Monica,Calif.Although she’s currently at Camarillo, this is thought to be only temporary, and she’ll be assigned to another CAF wing in due course.

RE: Cockpit teaser
Is it a hovercraft of some sort?
RE: New Picture
One report I read said that he wanted to make it airworthy with it’s original engines.Something tells me the man has more money than sense.
RE: Another Quiz….
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 18-10-02 AT 10:32 PM (GMT)]Thanks for putting us out of our misery at last! 🙂 I could be wrong, but I’m fairly sure the platoon sergeant in Private Ryan was Sgt. Horvath, rather than Horvatch.Typo??
By my reckoning, the film in which John Wayne flies P40’s in the Far East is called ‘Flying Tigers’.In Flying Leathernecks, he plays a Marine pilot flying Hellcats and Corsairs. The nickname for a US Marines pilot was a ‘Leatherneck’,hence the name of the film. I’m trusting my memory on this one-probably not a wise move!
My memory is also telling me that the two squadrons on Angels One Five were codenamed Pimpernel and Beeswax,as opposed to Hornet. Time I watched a few of these again.Looking through the list I realise just how long it’s been since I’ve seen some of them.
RE: Info on XG210 please
Hi Moggy,
The number is indeed XG210.She was used by various frontline units before being passed to DeHavilland at Hatfield and used for trials work, and then to the A&AEE where she picked up the rasberry ripple paintjob. She was retired some years ago and is now in private hands as a static airframe. She’s looking a bit sad and faded, but she’s said to be in fair nick otherwise.
Damien B’s Thunder & Lightnings site has pics and info on XG210,aswell as many others.
RE: Another Quiz….
The answer to number 2 is that ‘Septic’ strains his Legimentum Mucea (spelling??) pronounced,’Mukai’.According to Septic,we should all have noticed it in cows.
RE: Forum Getogether?
Just thought I’d point out that Piece of Cake was a six part series, each part lasting about an hour,so I’m thinking it might be a tad on the long side.
I’d be happy to go and see BofB or DBW,and watching some stuff from the IWM archive sounds pretty tasty n’all. What sort of things does the IWM have in it’s film archives??
RE: Radio Times ‘Dambusters’ letter…
Well put Tony, nice one! 🙂 I just hope they print some of the letters that have been sent in response. All too often in newspapers, mags etc, they will publish a letter by someone who hasn’t a clue what they are talking about, and then they fail to print any of the responses sent in reply to it.Uppermost in my mind are the events of June last year and the coverage they recieved in the general media, particularly the Evening Standard.Goodness knows how many letters they recieved from us forum members and the wider public, but they chose not to print any of them.
RE: new member wants to share pics
Here you go SeaFuryFan.Got this from Airliners.net.It was taken at Greenham Common in 1981. Enjoy 🙂

RE: Interesting Lightning story from the 70s
One of the things that occurs to me is whether a Lightning could be ditched at all.I don’t claim to be an expert, but by my reckoning a Lightning would have to be travelling at a fair old lick even at it’s lowest controllable speed, perhaps in excess of 100mph?
To my mind there is no point in ordering the pilot to ditch. He could simply have ejected,so why would he make an almost certainly fatal ditching attempt??
To my mind, the whole story has been blown out of proportion, twisted etc etc.Perhaps there was some sort of military cover up to begin with, but there seems to have been alot of ‘spin’ and general sensationalising of the events added since.
RE: Prays to all those affected by this horrible act..
This is very sad and tragic news, and I for one am seriously angry about this, almost as mad as I was when the WTC was attacked.I’m with the US point of view in terms of the fact that something has to be done to destroy global terrorist networks, although I also agree with the above statement about the dubious wisdom of attacking Iraq.I’m not convinced though that this attack has too much to do with the Iraq situation. As far as I can tell, much of SE Asia is a hotbed of Muslim extremism, and according to some ‘experts’ who’ve voiced thier opinions, there is alot of sympathy for Islamic terror groups in these countries. This could well be more to do with the local situation than the global one.

RE: Avenger pic
Thanks for the picture Merlin.I just thought I’d point out that Midway was not the Avenger’s finest hour.If I remember rightly, only a few survived thier attack run,and only one Avenger finally made it home. The Avenger proved it’s worth in the long run though, particularly with the Fleet Air Arm and the British Pacific Fleet. If it hadn’t been for the supply of Avengers, the Navy would have had to struggle on with the Barracuda, which was finding little favour among the FAA squadron’s who used them. One Corsair pilot remarked that every deck landing of a Corsair looked dicey, but every Barra looked a certain crash!
RE: Save a Sea Vixen
Hi Merlin,
I think David is making a fair point.Mustangs are much in demand in the US and elsewhere, and just about any substantial bits and pieces that come onto the market are snapped up at potentially airworthy prices. It’s a similar situation to what we have over here with Spitfires-you can basically build one from scratch if needs be,and this is frequently what happens. This means that any old identifiable bit is immediatelly a potential flyer. As David was pointing out, these high prices lock out the museums that might want a Mustang for static display.Even the IWM couldn’t get hold of a static Mustang at a reasonable price, hence the wood/plastic one on a pole in the AAM.I think there are probably more Mustangs surviving in airworthy condition than static examples.
If the IWM couldn’t get hold of one,it seems likely that East Fortune folks wouldn’t either.
RE: Dark Blue World
Likewise, here in West London I couldn’t find a cinema that was showing it at all.Guess I’ll have to wait for the video/DVD.
