    Runaway,

The Beaufighter was a development of the Beaufort bomber, the idea in the simplest terms being the wings and tail of the Beaufort married to a slimmer fuselage and fitted with more powerful engines. The “Beaufort fighter” became known as the Beaufighter and the name was adopted officially.

This avenue has probably already been explored, but there used to be a Hercules (seem to remember it was a wartime type with collector ring) on display at Tangmere. It was a pristine engine on a stand and used to have it’s own room near the reception desk. This was probably 15+ years ago and it wasn’t there on my last visit about five years ago.

The apparently collapsed nose-leg certainly doesn’t look encouraging. Here’s hoping the level of panel removal is a sign of restoration work, rather than prep for scrapping.

Fantastic! Congratulations to you all. Here’s hoping the final paperwork doesn’t take too long.

Many thanks Syd, every day is a school day, as the old saying goes. There seems to have been plenty of confusion around the subject, here’s hoping something definitive gets widely published on the subject.

Do you have any links to the colour photos of 14 Sqn Marauders you mentioned? They would be something worth seeing.

Out of interest Syd, can I ask what sources you take the info from? Only asking as there appear to be several renditions of operational IV’s in Desert schemes. It would be interesting to know where the error has crept in. The modelling fraternity are usually pretty hot on this stuff, and there on the IPMS Stockholm site is a rendition of a Desert marked Kittyhawk IV of 112Sqn…

Apologies about my previous post, what I thought were Mk.IV’s were in fact Mk.III’s. The III’s were at least long-tails…

Having looked again at a photo of the original FX760, I can see what you mean Syd about the probability of it being a temperate land scheme. However, I can also see how it might be confused for a Desert scheme.

There are pics of RAF Kitthawk IV’s in Desert schemes while based in both N Africa and Italy, so the paint job isn’t telling massive porkies. The camo pattern is reversed and FX760 probably wasn’t in desert colours, but on the whole it does a decent job of representing a N. Africa/Italy based Kittyhawk. In my opinion, anyway…

    Khalem,

I have 100% sympathy with your position, thanks for trying your best.

I think we all need to remember that we use this forum for free and that Key has no obligation to provide any kind of forum, I agree this format is a bit of a retrograde step so far but we aren’t in much of a position to expect our will to be carried out. If we were paying members I would see the whole thing differently, but as it is we are getting a forum and a good standard of communication considering there is no money involved.

My only real gripe is the spidery font, really could do with something bolder.

Seem to remember the finishing touches on the P40 were done in a bit of a rush in preparation for the 50th anniversary of El Alemain in 1992, which perhaps helps explain the paint. Seem to remember it was painted in-situ in the museum. Haven’t seen it in person for ages, but when I last saw it a few years ago the paint was scuffed and chipped in several places and it looked as though the top coats had been applied without primer??

Just my opinion, but I think we’re lucky to have a P40 at RAFM at all. I know it’s a bit of a bitsa, but it does a pretty good job of representing a Desert AF P40. Yes it would be nice to have a “nicer” example, but they don’t grow on trees.

I’ve also seen that explanation, but it still begs the question as to the “normality” of having an airliner with a stability issue. All the talk in the media (aviation and other) seems to focus on the MCAS system and how it might be modified etc. Perhaps the questions should really be about the aircraft’s basic handling characteristics rather than the systems designed to compensate for the deficiency?

From a layman’s point of view, it strikes me as a bit odd that an airliner should have a stability assistance system in the first place. Are there other airliners that have this kind of computer/sensor derived system? I always think of airliners as being stable and not requiring any kind of stability assistance.

I’ve just tried the “New Posts” trick again and it works every time for me, rather than taking me just to page two. Might be a browser/device issue? I’m using Chrome and Windows 10 on a laptop.

Just a tip for those who are frustrated with having to go to the first page of a thread every time:

When you come to the forum you should see how many new posts are on a particular thread. Where it says “3 New Posts”, you can click on it and it will open on the most recent posts. You can also right click and open the thread in a separate tab.

Thanks for keeping us updated Khalem, it’s great that we still have a forum and even better that you and Key are bothered about it enough to keep up with the comments.

I agree about the feint lettering and the eye-strain, we could really do with a darker colour and/or bolder font for the main body of text. I’m under 40 and it’s a real strain, anyone with older/dodgier eyes than me must really be struggling.
