“I’m thinking I’ll start by building a mockup fuselage out of cardboard – I need to see if I fit before I try it for real! ” – I recently did, and I do! Very pleasing!
Blue, has the Flea taken a backseat since you became involved with the Meteor?
The notice mentioned is also on their Facebook page as their cover photo. Another news story here: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11898105
Oddly, the TVAL Twitter account has completely vanished.
Thank you for your post GrahamA, that is precisely how (I think) the majority of warbird/heritage aviation folk here feel about John and his collection. I’ve never had the pleasure personally but always enjoy hearing about those of others.
His website downplays any allegations of harassment against anyone in his family and seem to suggest the 2011 riots were the cause of the move, but none of that really falls into the purview of this site!
I never knew about his reason for grounding himself. I imagine seeing close friends die could have that effect on anyone.
I’m 99.9% sure the three projects done/being done by AvSpecs moved by road from Glyn Powell’s shop to Ardmore, and that was all in the last decade or so!
He has two P-40s, the other is P-40E 41-36410/EV156/NZ3043. He also has P-51D 45-11513/NZ2423, among others. The Hudson mentioned and glimpsed in the link has since moved on.
And no need for quote marks: John Smith is his actual name.
Daz – try out a DH.4, I was stunned at the size of it! Actually it’s likely about the same, the US-built ones in NZ look bigger because of the cowling and radiator arrangement.
It’s fantastic to see the DH.9 at Duxford. I’m truly very envious of all of you able to see it up close and, in time, watch it fly. A wonderful achievement.
“That has to be the worst byline I’ve ever seen, ever” – Bruce, the byline is the credit of who wrote the piece :eagerness:
Ando: mixed feelings about you burning Mosquito remains. I’m glad it helped you survive, but at the same time…! Watching the flames does sound interesting though.
I wonder if the owner of DZ542 will get their hands on one of these? Would be cool to see it displayed alongside the aircraft.
Part 3 is up: https://youtu.be/zQyDaMtjhfc
No Mustangs flying in RNZAF colours? Admittedly this is from March last year but I’m fairly sure ZK-TAF is airworthy:

Very sad news – Vlado was a well-liked and very respected member of the WIX forum (as well as the larger US scene), and Bethany was an ag-pilot of some repute. All-round a horrible accident.
I binged on Kermie Cams yesterday – work had to close due to a power cut – and I agree on the TP-40N, very keen for that one!
😎 From one modeller to another, I’m always happy to encourage new projects!
And now back to Dunkirk! Comes to the local cinema next Thursday so shall keep some money saved so we can go see it.
Thanks Mark, I probably should have expected you to appear :eagerness: Another model subject for Daz, maybe?
So this is the aircraft that crashed in 1996 and for some reason they wrote 2006 on the label? Weird..
