Airfix has reissued their 1/48 Spitfire Mk.XII kit so I’m curious: has anyone any updates to share of EN224/G-FXII’s restoration?
Bravo Dave!
Amazing stuff as always Dave, and thank you for adding text to explain what various procedures were for. I love modern camera technology – especially when used for something like this!
DH82EH: that sounds a wonderful experience!
A Lightning and a Tiger…brilliant!
DH82EH – no offence intended at all!
Dave – that is such a cool photo! Now saved to my screensaver/wallpaper folder. Due to the speed differential I expected John to just fly by with my frantically trying to get him in frame but he did a great job formating (or at least slowing enough for me to snap away).
Definitely not what I was expecting when I got up that morning!
Resurrecting a long-dead thread and tying into this current one, are there any guesses as to which Lincoln (or possibly Lancaster) fuselage Sir Peter Jackson owns as mentioned by Kermit Weeks in this video?
DH82EH, that is very cool! What a great series of shots!
“Using a Tiger as a camera ship for a jet would be way too slow.” – as Sopwith mentioned, I now feel qualified to disagree! I asked here because before we went up I was wondering if anyone else had ever done such a thing as it seemed so counter-intuitive!
The Venom is owned by John Luff and the Tiger by his son Darren – this was the first time they’d flown together.

Excellent news!
Thank you Simon, I was taking a total shot in the dark as to the spelling of Mike’s surname!
Brilliant stuff Dave, I hope your helmetcam footage is made available as it would be fascinating to watch. How wonderful to get such an in-depth look not just at the history represented but also the preparation, and execution, of the initial test flight. Bravo to everyone involved in this wonderful endeavour!
I’m excited to read this: as soon as I learned how to operate our VCR Test Pilot was on a loop in our house and I’ve always looked up to Dave. The fact this P-39 once resided in New Zealand is an added bonus! Thank you for the link, Elliott!
The XS422 team have followed up on their reply to me and posted a bunch of videos to their YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCrfNHaTwMp-ltqnwBNmiCWQ/videos
And she looks to be a stunning example. Well done to all involved!
That’s great to hear! The team said they will upload to YouTube soon.
She was fast-taxied in 2019, its first since 1987:
Taxi trials have now recommenced, a video was posted of one that took place on April 15:
Hopefully you can see it without needing a Facebook account – I know many forum users are not participants of that platform so I’ve suggested to the team they share it on the group’s YouTube channel too.
