    RE: Australia’s refugee problem

Part of the problem is that political correctness stops countries from only allowing immigration from certain countries.

The Aussies used to have a “white Australia” policy which was rightly condemmed. So they went 180 degrees to a “any comers” policy which is equally as bad. What they ought to have done is opt for a middle-ground policy.

Immigrants from Europe and North America have more in common ethnically, culturally and even linguistically with Joe Aussie. There is therefore less potential for crime if these groups are given “preferred” status. Obviously criminals and slackers should still be barred!

Actually, I believe there used to be immigration porgrammes in the UK to encourage Brits to move to Australia, but they seem to have stopped it. Why?

RE: Your fav place in the world?

“That place look really nice Mongu… how long did you stay there?
    Regards

    Andrew”

About 10 days. It is roughly a 7 hour drive from Cape Town, about 8 hours to Port Elizabeth. Nearest airport is George – 45 mins on a J41 from CPT, about 2 hours to JNB on a CRJ or 737-800. Absolute paradise. My parents decided to buy a home there to retire to! Given the value of the Rand, they can afford to buy a Palace, too.

    RE: Discount Viagra

Of course every country is corrupt Geforce. My point is that the EU is more corrupt that most countries!

Transparency International is a NGO which publishes a “corruption percptions index” every year. It measures perceived coruption in each country. Some of you will probably say it isn’t perfect, but it still seems a reasoble effort.

In 2001, Finland was No. 1, UK was No. 13, Belgium was No. 24, USA was No. 16 and Bangladesh was 91st (last) just behind Nigeria.

    http://www.transparency.org/cpi/2001/cpi2001.html

If the EU was surveyed, I reckon it would rank about 40th.

    RE: Iraqi Invitation

I’m not convinced. Firstly, there is no moral reason to get Saddam. This means most of the Gulf countries will oppose it. Politically, most Euro countries apart from the 51st State will also oppose it.

The US is taking a very big risk if they invade Iraq again. The prize is…well, what exactly is the prize? The danger is that a whole new generation of “terrorists” could be born out of anger at US actions.

Well in Andrew’s defence, it does seem a littler amatuerish. Makes you wonder what the rest of the company is run like.

Laser products? I always used my CD player and Minidisc player. No one ever told me not to.

I don’t buy that stuff about battery operated products being dangerous. What about digital watches, cameras, pace makers! They even sell these things onboard!

    RE: Europe’s Worst Airport?

Fair point, it does look as if I have a grudge. I don’t think I do, it’s just the way it seems. Maybe I’m hyper critical. I could criticise any other airport you name, as long a I have been to it.

I don’t understand your point about NI to be honest – you are saying that the “majority” means the population of the whole of the island of Ireland? I can’t agree with that. Look at similar positions – India/Pakistan, US/Canada, even Alaska/Canada. You seem to be saying that if part of a landmass is a separate country from the majority (population wise) then the right to decide the future lies with the bigger part? What is the difference between ROI/NI and US/Canada? Should the US be able to engulf Canada because it was only partitioned by old colonials? I’m sure the native Americans didn’t distinguish the two countres from each other.

Similarly on tax, your argument is a bit naive. Who creates jobs for 90% of the population? The top 10% might be a good answer. Who defines “fair”? Don’t you think that people who earn more, also spend more? Does that not mean in turn, that they pay more indirect tax like VAT or GST? Even someone “dodging” high tax rates will still usually end up paying more than Joe Normal. The notion of someone paying “no tax” is just a myth (if you exclude babies!)

Shorts 330 from the Isle of Man to Teesside in late 70’s or early 80’s. Manx Airlines as they once were.

    It stumped me as well.

All the FAQ says is to enter the URL of your picture in the field provided to you. What URL? Are individual pics only available if you have your own web space?

    RE: Rare Qantas pics

I remember flying on them quite often as a kid. All the passengers used to groan; unpressurised cabin was the main drag. This is one of the ones I used to fly one the best part of two decades ago:-
