Blue skies Sir.
Me too. I have often wondered why he is reffered to as Harry instead of Henry. Is it something a newspaper started or is it by royal instruction?

A few years ago my missus wanted some fitted wardrobes built. I called a local firm who sent a young chap round to measure up and quote for the job. He took the measurements, tapped away on his calculator and then came up with a price of £1730. I asked him what it would be if I paid cash up front. He tapped away on the calculator again and came up with another price, £2330!! No, I don’t understand that one either.

Quote’What then was “the battle of barking creek”, neither a battle nor a skirmish but men died all the same; is 603 sqn’s tally relevant to the discussion?’Quote
At the time it would probably have been called (officially) a disastrous mistake, or (unofficially) complete c*ck up. These days it would be sanitised as friendly fire! I really hate that term, people still die or get injured.
Back on topic, I think it right to say that no debate on it is pointless as any battle or skirmish will have had an impact on someone but Andy is right, it is impossible to have definitive dates. It could be argued that the whole war was a battle of Britain, our fate depended on the outcome.
Kev – I must have been typing this when you put your post up (or have been blind for a minute or two).
Very sad news, another hero takes to the skies for the last time. No moon tonight is a fantastic book, a must read for anyone with any interest in Bomber Command.
Quote:The last time a dam was blown up by a bouncing bomb was in May 1943. Well, not true.:Quote
Is true! It stated in the documentary that they were not allowed to carry a live charge and the dam was blown up by preset charges on the ground. Ok, I know it’s a bit pedantic.
Were there silica bags left in the other engines as well that fortunately weren’t sucked in or did they get removed and somehow just one side got overlooked. I would find it strange that bags were in one side but not the other, unless of course it was two people that were supposed to remove them and one person made the error. Even that would suggest a lapse in the system or very poor communication.
To kill a mockingbird – Harper Lee
Of mice and men – John Steinbeck
Both excellent.

Wasn’t there a story of a lady with a farm who remarried after being told her husband had been killed in action, WW 1 I think. A few years later her first husband turned up alive and well. I think she continued to live with both men.

Recorded this the other night and just watched it. Excellent documentary, one of the best to be on TV in years.
Incredible that it’s thirty years ago. it doesn’t seem like it. I was an apprentice electrician at the time and we were wiring out a the workshop of a large Ford main dealer. The radio was always on and they interupted the program to give us the news about HMS Sheffield. The place came to a standstill, you could of heard a pin drop.
