I agree, they were definitely the loudest band I ever saw (or should that be heard). I had tinnitus for hours afterwards and at one point thought I’d done permanent damage to my hearing! I believe there is a campaign to have the new element 118 that is being added to the periodic table named Lemmynium as it is a very heavy metal. Something of an oxy-moron if that’s the right word as Lemmy always insisted Motorhead were a Rock ‘n’ Roll band, not heavy metal.

RIP Lemmy, boy you were good, man you were LOUD!!

One question: why is 1946 so much worse than 1945? Or is it only losses for 1945 after VE-Day / VJ-Day?[/QUOTE]

My feeling is that I it had a lot to do with the introduction of jet aircraft post war. A book I have called wings over Somerset details all the losses in or connected with the county from 1945 onwards. The early post war years are a grim read with Meteors, Vampires & Venoms crashing at a rate of around 2 per week. In most cases it says pilots had 100+ hours on piston types but usually less than 10 hours on the jets.

Hi All, my first post on modern military, I usually frequent the historic bit. Anyway, my son is an apprentice at AgustaWestland. They have confirmed the loss of one prototype AW609 tilt rotor and the tragic loss of two pilots (which you already knew). The company is working with the authorities to determine the cause of the crash. If he gets more info from the company about the loss I will let you know. I’m sure all our thoughts are with the families of the two pilots at this difficult time.

Did anything interesting happen in the last 20 mins? I’m afraid I nodded off!

About 40 years ago I asked my German teacher at school and he translated it as slanting music.

I liked the comment about airshow commentators in there. What was it, if the commentator would be quiet for a couple of minutes so the crowd can listen to the Merlins. As for the narration, terrible.

I did smile at that myself, it made me think of recent discussions on here. Anyway, so far we have had Red Arrows, Red Arrows and BBMF, next week looks like Red Arrows and Vulcan so week four must be Red Arrows and Chinook – should be interesting!

Lots of mistakes in everyday life. Headlamps emit light, but people all them headlights. Gas and Liquids are both fluids, but people rarely call air a fluid.
Gas turbine engines are called jets, but the jet of hot air is what’s emitted. People say “haitch” for the 8th letter in the alphabet, when it’s really “aitch”.
    And on it goes.

Whilst my inglish, spulling and grandma are far from perfect the mistake that always annoys me is when people say I will try and do it or try and get there etc. Try means to attempt and therefore we try to do it or try to get there.

Watched it last night having recorded it. I agree with the general comments – nice program spoiled by the narration. I don’t blame the chap narrating, as has been said he only reads it out and dramatises as directed. I suppose this is what we must now expect when programs are directed at a mainstream audience rather than an enthusiast (that seems to be the role of the air show DVD these days). I hope the BBMF edition does include PA474’s engine fire, it would at least be something real for them to get dramatic about.

Thanks for the link to the engine at RT&A, interesting stuff.

Re the paint scheme, I think that while the other roles the Lanc filled were of course also important and worthy, the sheer weight of history of the Bomber Command service dictates that PA474 should always be painted as a bomber.

I was told at a BBMF lecture a few years ago that the C/O could pretty much choose the scheme but it had to be one from a 100 op Lanc. This was around 5-6 years ago so things may have changed since then.

When I visited back in the early 90’s the Hurricane was just completed and waiting to be partially dismantled and taken away for reassembly and it’s first test flight. Next to it was a Typhoon or Tempest that work had just begun on (I can’t remember which and my photo’s are packed away in the loft so can’t do a quick check). There was also a Gazelle helicopter, a collection of pristine British cars, Morris 1000, various marks of Cortinas and Escorts, Morris Marina, Bentley, TR6 etc. on the other side of the workshop were over 100 British motor bikes dating back to the early 1900’s, all of them immaculate and in running order. Fantastic collection, such a shame it all had to go.

Back on line at last. Many thanks for your words of encouragement and advice. He is really enjoying it. The humour or ‘Banta’ as he calls it has already started. I asked how his first day went and was told “well dad, I have signed the official secrets act so I could tell you but I would have to kill you afterwards”.
