We’ve all seen the anti-aircraft fire footage from the Gulf War on the night of the invasion.

Pure gold. Flack fire like in 1944. And Bagdad was the most defended city in the World right?
I wonder why you migrated from MP.net here? Too little posts in General Car thread?

I have difficulties to say how pathetic the Suchoi 15 was … it had zero innovation or leading concepts, it merely showed that Suchoi was now able to build Mach2 capable fighters with a useful weapons system, something the USN had at hand years earlier (and better).

Su-15 was build and designed according to government requirements, one of which was for a cheap dedicated interceptor. There was no need for revolution that would make it costly. The task was hard enough with the engines available. And i can see no point in comparing F-4C and Su-15. Multirole fighter and dedicated interceptor guided by GCI that is unable to do any dogfight.

Imaging infra-red seekers generate a picture of the aircraft. With sufficient processing power, the location of the cockpit can be identified.

And all this is just in theory. Do you honestly think that the missile computer will be able to identify where is the cockpit in any plane? It can be fired against around hundred very different in composition aircrafts and it must recognise where is the cockpit from whenever aspect it’s from the target. In limited number of scenarios this is possible.

Igla-S is a small missile, with limited space, weight & power available, & built to be relatively cheap. Its capabilities have little relevance to those of much larger AAMs.

Thanks for the lesson. My point was that already there is a missile that target certain part of the target.

The JDRADM’s warhead can actually direct it’s blast at a SPECIFIC point on the target aircraft. Imagine a missile that aims for the cockpit or engine.

I know that Igla-S missile aim few meters ahead of the engines, because it was found that often the blast just do minor damage to the engine and the plane was not shoot down. I just can’t image how any missile will be able to aim for the cockpit. My guess is that against air targets the warhead will be aimed again around the middle of the plane.

from what we know of that time from limited reports

And that is the problem. There is too much stereotypes and accepted “facts” about Soviet/WP pilots. We can make summary that Soviet pilots were automated robots that will be used in suicidal missions. What does “freedom of decision making” means to an PVO pilot send to intercept target? His plane is designed to work with GCI network that will guide him to the target. I have spoken with few Bulgarian(ok, WP not Soviet) pilots before and there was no mention that they were limited in their decisions or that they were blindly following orders. In fact they were professional soldiers that were trained to use their aircraft according to the doctrine and tactics of that time. In the same time they were humans that loved to fly and loved their planes. There are lots of stories about low-level flights, some stunt moves, type of things that you don’t expect from automated communist robot.

    Hi Merkle.

In this site: http://knopka9.narod.ru/ there are many whole planes for sale, including Su-7. Maybe if you ask them they will sell you parts that they own or will obtain. The e-mail address is at the bottom of the page. There is no english version of the site, so if you need some help with translation just tell me. All prices for the planes are in thousands of dolars. Hope it helps.

Then there is Angola with a handful of Su-22M4 remaining, and I think Bulgaria has two as trainers.

Sadly all Su-22M4 in Bulgaria are retired. There was some talk that few of the planes were sold to private firm, and will end up in private colection somewhere in the west.

Any missile used will be likely guided in flight and will have radar/optical homing head. Even with conventional warhead with CEP around 20-30 meters, the warhead can cause heavy damage.
