Indeed… i have many a race program in the loft from Duxford promoting drag racing for cars and bikes in the 1960’s. Its one of the things that helped keep the place alive.!
Thanks Ollie.. i take my hat off to you guys for being so thorough. Keep up the good work.
I’m not sure either Johnnie.. Whitley or Wellington were just a wild stab in the dark.
Whitley or Wellington perhaps.??
I live overlooking the eastern end of Dx airfield and have the pleasure of seeing many a Tiger Moth, Rapide, Spitfire etc come virtually over the top of my house before turning finals. Everyone living in my road and the adjoining farmer have no problem with the airfield or its activities, including the said F1 demo. It was after all only one day, and whilst was very loud especially with the wind blowing in the direction of the village i think most people just accept it. It was after all far far quieter than the BAE Typhoon that diplayed previously.. so lets not get too hot under the collar.
There will always be those that don’t like what goes on there, but then again how many were actually born there (like me), or have lived in the village before flying started… in 1919.!!
If it generates positive interest or income to Duxford airfield then best of luck i say.!:)
WOW… both the FW190 and the Brewster Buffalo look in fantastic condition. Does make one wonder what else is going to surface in time.!
Did the Buffalo end up in the states, to be restored as a flyer maybe.?
I agree about the VC10 making more passes, but in this day and age i’m just grateful to see one in the air.. especially at Dx. Here’s a pic of her on “finals” on sunday.. taken from my bedroom window. Sorry its a bit small (the pic.. not me).:p
Adrian thanks for the link.. i never knew about that Beverley crash. What a sad sight to see. Be interesting to know if the buildings/walls are still extent and bearing the scars.!
Not quite sure what happened to the Sabre. On friday while preparing for what i presume was a practice display she aborted her take off part way along the runway and taxied back in. Hope its just a minor gremlin.
Yes i must say not a bad effort for Duxford.. something for everyone i think. Personally my favourites were the VC10, Wasp, Sally B and Gnat pair. And although some of the Gnats display was a bit ‘high and wide’ its always a pleasure just to see these wonderful aircraft actually flying. Thanks guys.
At a time when our own MP’s are busy with there noses in our troughs, it is so nice to hear for once of someone giving generously rather than taking. Many thanks Mr Ashby.:)
Erm…..you don’t suppose Altsel is really TIGHAR do you?
Now re-named.
Aircraft Like This Should be Exposed and Left.
😉
Priceless..:D
In my experience most arrivals/practices at Dx take place on the friday.. especially those from the services.
The colour is interesting. I recall several panels coming out with that creamy colour and some that had been black. Looking at it now, I wonder if this could be the black/creamy fawn Suez stripes? I always puzzled what the colour was and it has only just struck me tonight looking at Junk Collectors image. I may be way off mark, here….just an idea!
I can understand your way of thinking but as i understand it VZ795 was never used at Suez. The alternative being that it was maybe ‘painted up’ and held in reserve, or possibly had the wings/parts of an ex Suez machine fitted at some point.
Guys its not all bad.. thankfully we still have Kennets Griffon Seafire. Now that is what you call different.!;)
