Pub with history
Hi Guys.
The next time you all go to pay homage to BBMF at Coningsby, get your selves down to the “Blue Bell” in Tattershall Thorpe. This pub also has aircrew signatures on the ceiling, it also has many groundcrew signatures as well, including a few of us from BBMF who where asked to sign a few years ago now. On almost all the walls photographs show many aircrews with the Lancs and Mossies they flew.
Make the effort to go and see for yourselves, the landlord is a good bloke and the beer is top notch (Bomber county) the foods good to (you get real portions as well not these “Gordon Blue” dirty plate portions)
This realy is static, at the moment anyway…
I know these aren’t quite what you are looking for in static photographs, but i thought some of you may have wondered what the insides of a Merlin engine looks like.
These where taken with a Fugi Finepix A310.
Sorry about the quality.
Wasn’t that a 20mm cannon though?
We are talking about X8 303s firing together. I think they would transmit more staccato resonance than one 50 cal.
All that sand would make a bit of a mess of the Firefly, though! 😀
I don’t know. At least its on wheels!
Great idea.
I’m sure that they could just move the Gibraltar gun out of the way, and pop it back afterwards.
And build a new Mk I Spitfire to take the 8 .303s (unless you can persuade the BBMF to loan their Mk II P7350). You refer to a ‘static displayed Spitfire based at Duxford’ suitable for taking 8 .303s. Exactly which one do you have in mind?
And forgive my further confusion, but is this intended to be a blank or live firing exercise? If the former, why the requirement for butts, and the H&S concerns? You talk about ‘guns firing into a wall of sand’, but also about the guns being loaded with blanks. What exactly do you expect these blank rounds to fire into this wall of sand?
Not April 1st, is it?
Why move the Gib gun. Another set off gun butts are between 2 & 3 sheds…..
Anyway some of the statics I’ve seen may not take the pounding of 8 .303 Brownings.
Bob the Builders done a lovely job there……;)
So thats where you learned your trade……………
A few mins before 11:00 this morning I walked to the bottom of my garden and stood looking over a freshly ploughed field.
Two minutes of reflection, and thanking those who gave all, so I could gaze over “Englands green and pleasant land”

Wear your poppy with pride.
Snaps.
If more people like us, spoke up, we wouldn’t need to get angry..
Take care.
TO QUOTE SNAPS
“Has this Government got any respect left for those that fought for this country? And of course, for those that continue to do so? (but that’s another subject altogether)”
MY REPLY………..
This bunch of w—-rs in government now care for nothing but themselves.
Its time for a cull in the upper echelons of this Great Country of ours – (Yours and Mine) not only the A—–les in power.
To all who paid the ultimate price – God Bless you All.
To those who survive – I thank you.
To the polliticians – SOD OFF AND ROT.
I don’t care as long as they are kind enough to keep letting us see them where they belong.
Flying and not shut up in some p–y museum.
Hi,
The following books have details of Vales time over Greece and Syria.
‘The Air War for Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete’ and ‘Dust Clouds in the Middle East’ both by Chris Shores. There is also ‘Aces High’ by Chris Shores which has details of his claims.
From Air-Britain there is ‘Strike True, The story of 80 Squadron RAF’ again by Chris Shores. Not sure if this is still available though.
Are there 33 and 80 Sqn Associations?
If I can think of any more I’ll let you know.
Alex
What a star you are…..
Thanks for making the effort to look into this, Bill was a close friend of my dad,
but, where his logbooks went, know one seems to know
