Pendulum swung firmly against cheap PGMs. The cheap is relative term to expensive standoff weopons. The current success of Irakis and Ruaf is entirely due to unguided rockets and bombs . Iraki uses helicopter more effectively they have larger fleet and using it in formations . Helicopter is too risky never fly transport copter and fighters alone. Just CSIR need very immediate.

A basic Il-78 has 75% of the thrust of an A330 MRTT, but its engines have much higher sfc, & fuel consumption is probably about the same. There are well over 1000 A330s flying around, most in airline service, which is far more than the number of Il-76s & variants still existing, & flying far more hours on average. There’s a much better support infrastructure for the A330 as a result.
Why do you cite the C-130J & C-17? They’re US military freighters, not adapted civil airliners. Their operating costs are likely to be very different.
BTW, the C-17 & P-8 don’t have refuelling probes unless India’s added them. Quite a serious limitation for the P-8I, I think, unless tankers with booms are bought.
Don’t forget rough field performance of IL-78M. This thing maybe needed to supply fuel to makeshift airbases for helicopters and generators for SAM/Medical deployment. I estimate that once PD-14 engines are certified on IL-476 there wont be much difference with A-330.

Size/Weight brings another aspect to the discussion… A projectile hit on a engine or a fuel tank is still a mission kill for Mi-28 just as it is for a Tiger. A Tiger has 1/3 weight, 3 meters shorter. Which one would be easier to hit? While it is unquestionable a Mi-28 has better armor in certain areas like cockpit, how about unarmored but vital areas like engines, rotor, tail rotor etc? Technically againist a few techicals with machine guns spraying 14,5mm rounds at ~1 km range, 232 m2 rotor disk area of Mi-28 would make it much more vulnerable than a Tiger with just 133 m2 disk area.
how will these technicals hide from Mi-28 radar?. Its not Su-35 class radar but still it will find vehicles and manpower at considerable distance with all around survellence.
In Syrian coast I often see helicopters flying around at low altitude possibly looking for small boats. big helicopters have all around capability and flexibility in sensors/weopons and I am sure new weopons developed for Ka-52K will be installed on Mi-28NM. its waste of pilot training on lighter helicopters.

I think you are jumping to conclusions; it could have been an accidental incursion (2.5 miles into Israeli airspace. Also, depending on the type, they operate at different altitudes. The searcher 2, and Hermes have a ceiling of 20,000ft. Those smaller battlefield recon UAV typically operate below 2,000 meters.
If it was operating below 2000m than manpad should be used. or do you think it was smaller than bird? but if its too small than how radars tracked it?. what happened to so called radars cant track stealth.
