Super shots, nursing my red nose at the moment so will post some tomorrow.
Love the Apache…
Hi Alan, No, I never go on my own. usually have either my Wife and or both my sons or my elderly parents.
My point was never to offend anyone, simply to say my choice was to offer my entrance fee or fees as a contribution to the future of such shows.
The people who choose to use the School car park are helping the school etc…
I am also keen to say that I spent 15 years prior to my childrens appearance as a volunteer at Duxford giving my Sundays up once a month to drive over 100 miles to restore the aircraft at the museum for no reward apart from knowing we were investing in the museums future for other generations to come….
Again, I did not wish to offend, simply wanted to share my thoughts on a very popular issue.
I have to say I have been watching this thread grow since Duxford announced the Field Closure and have not been surprised by the comments…..
I wait all year for approx. 8 weeks of airshow heaven. I have the rest of the year to save up and look forward to weekends travelling to different parts of the country to see the RAF and private individuals invest huge sums of money and time for our entertainment.
I gladly queue and pay the entrance fee so the airfields and organisers can pay for their overheads to put on the show….
I do take some food with me but still purchase the odd box of chips or ice cream.
If we don’t give out they wont put on. I am not in a well paid job and consider myself lucky to be able to attend probably 6-8 shows per year. With the mentality some are showing on this thread I fear some of my shows are on borrowed time……
Signed….;)
I arrived on Sunday just after 8am, stalls just setting up, classic cars arriving, the smell of Bacon in the air….
Browsed around all the stalls both Aviation and Non-Av. After about two hours walking and browsing I returned to my car to see a car park half full. Read a few pages of a book that I cursed I never bought last year and was lucky enough to obtain this time. Quick phone call home and another browse, saw plenty of things I missed first time around and always had an aircraft landing or overhead. Another lucky purchase and bumped into some old faces. Visit to the food van and a slow walk back to the car. I was more than happy to spend the morning at Popham and felt my entrance fee, purchases and food bill were all good value for money and will be attending next year. Weather fantastic to boot after a glorious Abingdon the day before…;)
My copy of Kenneth Wynn’s “Men of the Battle of Britain” lists Johnson with the following;
“Posted to 7 OTU, Haywardenin August 1940, Joined 19 Sqn at the end of that month and moved to 616 Sqn at Kenley on Sept 5th. Johnson went into hospital on Sept 20th and did not return to the squadron until December”.
Hope this helps.
smashing photos, well done.
I will be attending Popham this year as I have done for countless other years.
I enjoy the whole day, the fly ins, the stalls, the bustle and after a very stressful week at work…. the open air to just swam around for a while to forget about
everything and immerse myself in my passion and hobby. Did the same at Shoreham and Kempton and will probably do the same again next year.
If I didn’t like it I wouldn’t go. 😎
Thanks for the info Rob and Teej. I’m realistic on what will be there on the day, and also weather in wales etc.
Beauty with this forum is how useful it is and how helpful members are…
Cheers again.
Many thanks for the info Tim. I’m sure I only asked what a lot of people were thinking. Yes I would go during a couple of week days and my patience would probably be sustained by some good reading material including my camera instructions…
Have invested in some new lenses this year and intend to use them quite a lot.
I also think that your photos will take a lot of effort to even get half close if I’m lucky enough to snap something.
Thanks again for sharing those excellent pics.
:eagerness:
Just amazing, am seeing more of this location on other forums. How accessible is it. How long walking from where you leave the car, any costs involved and do you need to book. I’m hooked. Well done mate. My fav is the Tornado giving it the Beans…..
Great Shots, awesome twin seat shots, probably as you don’t see them that often…
Well done and thanks for sharing.
Hear Hear, any more shots…….
I think you need to practice different ways of getting the “Perfect Shot”. That shot will happen for you, now that your images are on memory card you can shoot all day and edit ruthlessly when you return to your PC. I personally use the both eyes open option and start shooting before, during and after the cross over. Sometimes you get a better photo before of after the cross over. The fun is trying different methods and finding out what works for you. I have many favourite shots that other people don’t give a second glance to and other shots my friends like that I feel I could have done better with, the point is that you can experiment now and enjoy your time doing it………..
Good luck and remember, have fun….
