OK, I think I have now found it. Airfield was Down Ampney. Records show that on the evening of 6th June a Dakota of 28Sqn ditches in the sea, this mirrors Regiment diary so I think I have found where my Uncle took off from.
Many thanks for steering me in the right area…

Ok. Looks like its Farringdon in Oxford then, does say in Regt Diary that they leave Brize by Motor Transport to Farringdon. Devon would be too far I suspect at that final moment.. Thanks. I will keep looking for more clues though.

Sorry Trumper, just got in from work and read your reply to my cornfield fire entry. I assumed that the fire was started by the “Non-Paying Spectator” as the fire started under or very close to his car, the farmer was not working that day and Yes it did annoy me that as I was a “Paying Spectator” He or She did spoil things for a while……

Would have to agree with Moggy on this one….
Can anyone remember the airshow at Duxford within about the last 5 years when a field across the back where people were parked and watching the show caught fire…
Fire tenders from the airfield were despatched to respond and as a direct result of less emergency vehicles on the airfield and the smoke from the fire, the airshow was halted until the fire was under control and the firemen were back inside the perimeter. The fire was caused by a car parking in the cornfield or a stray cigarette, either should not have been there and as a direct result of this all the “Paying Punters” inside Duxford had to wait until things were sorted out…..

Totally agree with all of the threads. We all have No1 show choices for different reasons. Farnborough had some good memories for me, SR71 and Concorde, but I would probably pick Mildenhall as my Choice. F15’s F18’s MH53’s, KC135’s in buckets…… This is where this forum stands out. Someone somewhere shares the same memories, ideas or aspirations and its great to connect.
