according to sources monitoring the programme.
JDW reported a year ago that China holds no rights to re-export the Russian-made Klimov RD-93 turbofan engine that powers the prototype aircraft. This indicated that the programme involving Pakistan could suffer delays.
Foreign sources familiar with the programme are less certain.
These sources say the JF-17’s radar system poses another problem, but it is unclear whether this centres on a similar issue related to re-export rights.
Hmmm, this is more like a new opinion piece based on Jane’s older opinion pieces from “foreign sources” not really connected with the project. This isn’t news reporting but an editorial.
Actually, all the current signs look good with prototypes flown on schedule and interest from quite a few countries. If the engine was a problem, the project would have never gotten off the ground. Prototype 01 wouldn’t have flown much less 02.
But it is safe to say that neither the engine nor the avionics are ironclad at this point. The FC-1 was described repeated as open architecture where engine, avionics and even FCS is left open.
If it’s not the RD-93, it will be a Chinese alternative whether Kunlun 3 or even a turbojet. Avionics-wise, the Kopyo system has no chance so the radar would be subjected Russian embargo is nil.
You laughed twice! 😀
looks like something out of Thunderbirds!!!
Thunderbirds? No way. That thing can never do a barrel roll.
Akula, only 1 Akula II is in service,nl. Gepard, One is rumored to be building at the moment. Otherwise, for all SSNs, the numbers are very unclear. Sierra II I think only 2 are built.
Borei: 2 are building: Yuri Dolgoruki and Alexander Nevskiy
Delta IV: 7 units in service
Typhoon: 2 units active, only one carries 10 missiles, all other missiles are used in exercises and the missiles are not in production anymore. So, only 1 is really operational.
OscarI/II SSGN, they are supposed to be quite active because the Russian Navy still considers them as really important.
Say, how many Akula are in service again, Sev? You said only one Akula II but the originals were still pretty capable boats. How many?
And the Oscars? Hazegray has about 10 Akulas and around 8 Oscars I/II.
Your namesake, the Severodvinsk, will it ever be built?
The sub fleet still has to be the formidable part of the Russian navy. More than the surface fleet and even the air arm.
What are your opinions?
Holy cowpies, everyone and his brother is beating up on the USAF/USN!
There is a rumour Maroc will buy 20-40 K8. Build in Egypt.
The Morocco story has been listed in publications for a long time. Jane’s has Morocco listed as a customer for years but there was never any confirmation.
But there had been stories of Morocco receiving planes from Egypt instead of China. And it would make sense since Egypt will be nearing the end of its contracted production run of 80 K8Es.
I doubt that the lines in Egypt will be closed so they’ll be used for export to third nations like Morocco.
Of IRIAF will buy in 2008 then they need more assembly lines… I don’t think one in pakistan and one in China are going to be enough. (150-150-40-…) all from 2008…
The pecking order of who gets the FC-1 will most likely be PAF first, then exports, and finally PLAAF. China would need to time to integrate the J-10 and J-11. So after the initial 8 production planes, all subsequent available airframes will go to export before the PLAAF.
Also, there is the possibilities of more production lines than just the ones in Pakistan and China.
Judging from the K8E program and reported interest of Egypt concerning the FC-1, Egypt might attempt to get a line. In fact, it is probably impossible to sell the FC-1 to Egypt, which has access to US jets, without some kind of tech transfer.
At any rate, there are a lot of good signs involving the FC-1 already. it will do no worse than the K-8 at the very least but probably significantly better because unlike the K-8, the PAF is committed to a large order from the very beginning.
Good post PLAWolf.
According to the
http://www.863.org.cn/english/annual_report/annual_repor_2000/als2000_07.html
“The airborne L-SAR system, 128-band operative modular imaging spectrometer (OMIS), 244-band wide FOV hyper-spectral imager (WHI) and high-resolution CCD area array digital photogrammetric camera system have been developed and applied to the country’s major events such as the west development, the construction of Zhongguancun (Beijing) S&T Park and the bidding for the 2008 Olympic Games.”
It seems it’s an array of sensors that is encapsulated in a pod or an UAV. It’s civilian but does give an indication of what the military recon might be like.
This prompts an idea for a film…
CHICKEN RUN II,
FLIGHT FROM BANGKOK!!!Will the chicken’s escape be cut short by Su-30s?
If recall correctly, the escape vehicle taking the chicken to freedom in the original was based on the Avro Lancaster?
The idea of raiding a country of 70 million people like Iran without repercussions is lunacy. Iran is fast becoming a moderate state, in spite of its cleric leadership. A bombing raid would radicalize the population again.
K8 – glass cockpit
According to a Chinese language post:
On Sept. 14, a K-8, number 301, with all Chinese multifunctional display monitors flew successfully.
Earlier in this thread, there was a report of the North Xi’an Electronics Co. providing the equipment for the K-8 new cockpit development program.
We had the Su-30 for frozen chicken thread earlier here. What I didn’t know in that thread was that the Swedes had rejected the chicken deal.
So it’s not “chickens to buy both Sukhois and Gripens” but more like “someone take this big frikkin mountain of frozen chicken off our hands.”
FC-1 to Iran
According to a posting a Chinese language forum, a paper, the “Daily Express” said that an Iranian Air Force commander stated that the IRIAF will purchase the FC-1. Delivery of a batch of 40 will hopefully begin in 2008(!)
Unconfirmed yet, so it’s still “rumor” until I get some corroborating evidence.
Songbird’s work is legendary in the Chinese-language aviation community. His classic work is the 1960s-era J-12 that was posted before in this forum and many other forums. Lego is more drawn art, not CG. Yup, a better comparision to Songbird work would be Stinger who did the J-10 and the new DDG CGs.
The CDF guys think this is the the first of 2 OPVs Thailand ordered. That’s why the number is 511. Not bad for an OPV huh?
Hmm, now that you mentioned it, the vessel does look a little truncated in comparision to the Naresuan.
An OPV could be something as large as an American Coast Guard cutter couldn’t it, Ja?
Interesting picture?
How about a Romanian H-5 🙂 Go to Robin Polderman’s wonderful site on the H5 in the FAR.
