Western stranglehold on the commercial engine market is tighter than a boa constrictor around a rabbit.
An air force might risk a shaky but high performing engine with potential but not airlines.
The new players aren’t even considering their own engines for their own market.
The largest market for new commercial carrier aircraft is China and all their big commercial projects, the ARJ21, the Y8F series and the MA60 series use GE or P&W turbofans and turboprops. The projected sales for all three types are in the hundreds each for the Chinese feeder market alone and their production run will probably go way past 2020 with western engines.
I don’t think you’ll see a non-western commercial engine before 2050. You need a new country to build one and run it on its own planes for a few decades before the engine series is considered economical, reliable and safe enough for it to be put into widespread use.
Russia, by all rights, should have produced a competitive world-class civilian turbofan by now since it had run its own liners with indigenous turbofans for years. But the most promising Russian jetliner, the Il-96M, uses Pratt & Whitneys.
So how long has the this J-10B been officially public?
GDL, the J-10, whether one or two seat version, is not officially public.
But from the PLAAF watcher’s standpoint, the first hint of flight was in a FC-1 related article in September 2003 which said Chengdu and the FC-1’s lead designer was expecting first flight of an unnamed two-seat fighter at the company in December of that year.
So the J-10B was believed to have flown at the end of 2003. We started getting pictures about two months ago.

K8V!
A Chinese aviation mag, according to a post, said the K-8V was actually a huge step in China’s FBW development.
“On June 25, 1997, the Chinese second-generation “variable stability aircraft and inflight simulation test aircraft” airplane K8v was flown successfully by air force test flight group (CFTE) test pilot Li Cunbao and Shi Tongzhou. K-8v changes the steady airplane not only to have three axis of freedom (pitch, yaw, roll) changes the steady ability, moreover also can complete including takes off, the landing many kinds of aerial mission airborne simulation test flight and so on the special topic research. “
That is this plane can simulate not only the handling characteristics of other planes but also their takeoff and landing behaviors.
This is pretty advance FBW abilities even by 1997. If one aircraft isn’t hard enough, you are creating a system capable of dealing with the flight characteristics of various aircraft.
The FBW laws written and steadily developed over six years for the IFSTA would be an indicator of the systems in the J-10 and FC-1.

That was an experimental engine, but it’s rather small, good for trainers.
Japanese shot themselves in the foot with a major shotgun by not attempting to develop a military class turbofan starting in the eighties, since it takes at least 10 to 15 years for an engine project to mature. Suffice to say it is too late now for them to start one other than for commercial jet applications.
No way! Commercial engines are even harder to develop. You need good efficiency, EXTREME reliability and, especially, a long life cycle. This is why you never have Russian engines as options for leading airliners.
When it comes to commercial engines, there is a very, very select group of companies. Whether it is Airbus or Boeing, a majority of the engines for liners come from P&W or, especially, GE.

Heck, it was hard to get Soviet OIL during the Cold War and Russian petrol was not considered part of Western market calculations during the Cold War years.
Today that is entirely different. The current drama at YUKOS is driving oil prices through the roof and killing the American stock market.

Over_G, when you see this thing (:D) it is meant to be funny. But in my statement about the Titanium and US usage, it was a humorous play on something that was quite real during the Cold War.

Lots and lots. Which is why I said the Russians didn’t actually avoid titanium and it was the point of my post.
But it is also true that they reverted to steel again because working with titanium in a massive scale such as large production classes of subs and planes was simply not economical as well as extremely time-consuming.
If you understood the Cold War and where this extremely rare precious metal comes from, you have understood the joke, Over_G 🙂
