He acts like he’s stupid, Hydropod, whether he really is that dumb is debatable.

What is obvious is he’s a flamer. I don’t know of too many serious Chinese members here deliberately posting photoshops, having a hard time understanding an old Chinese metaphor, using racial slurs against Pakistanis and saying obviously untruths about the J-10 two seater being PSed and the AWACs pictures being old

The UAE deal is $80m per plane.

$50-60 million is the price for the Block 60 airframe and avionics, probably weapons too, according to what I read. Basically, that’s its “flyaway.” The other $20 million per plane is for the maintenance, spares and other services.

What constitutes a “flyaway” price isn’t entirely set in stone. The best way is to look at deals and proposals and determine the per plane price from there. Offsets and ToT, of course, confuse things a bit.

But in the UAE sale and the Polish Block 52 proposal ($70m per plane), there were no manufacturing offsets.

The actual interview also talks of 2 mission computers.

Usman shabir (of Pakdef) clarified the issue…the aircraft has a full FBW with a redundant hydraulic system. According to him, the next issue of AFM will have a 5-page special on JF-17…may clarify more issues.

Usman is the Man!!! He must be one of the most connected members in the forum.

Not a lot of us have gotten interviews with air force project avionics chiefs and head-ups on upcoming articles 🙂

jwzjwz2003cn: Then can you stop posting pics from 1yr ago? It is very annoying.

It seems he goes out of his way to get the oldest stuff as well as the Photoshopped stuff 😀

    Very strange.

A happier note on transports from the Chinese language forums:

Shaanxi Aircraft has signed contracts with Iran to overhaul and reequipt Y-8s and is in discussion with Sudana and Namibia for sales of new ones.

Similar to Xinhui’s post on AVIC been using CATIA, the article also said that Shaanxi is slowly improving post sale-service and followup. Things that are inherent in market economy companies but takes a state firm like Shaanxi some time to learn 🙂

Il-76 plane crash in China might be caused by overload-expert

    18.05.2004, 17.26

BEIJING, May 18 (Itar-Tass) – Overload in combination with bad weather might have been the main cause of the Russian-made cargo plane Il-76 crash, an informed expert in Beijing told Itar-Tass.

The plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Urumqi airport in the northwest of China on Tuesday morning.

According to the expert, the aircraft was performing a flight en route Taiyuan-Urumqi-Baku-Riga and was loaded with clothes and convenience goods – articles of small wholesale “shuttle” trade that are eventually delivered to Russian cities.

“Transport planes with Azerbaijani identification signs are not equipped with special protective nets like the Russian cargo planes, so they can be overloaded beyond all limits,” the expert noted.

The JH-7 certainly has the range and loiter time. The Spey might be underpowered but it is very fuel efficent.

To have an idea of how the cockpit of production JF-17 will look like you should wait for the Prototype 04 since it will be used for avionics and weapons integration & qualification tests.

If it on the same schedule of 01 and 03 (7 months between flights), 04 should be up by the end of the year. I think the main sticking point, if any, would the decision on the radar package. The news reports that came out during the 03 first flight said look for 04 early next year.

Great, great work, Usman, to get the JF-17 avionics project director!

The aircraft will also be equipped with IRSTS, CLDP, and Helmet Mounted Display to provide all weather operations capability in all types of environments.

This is must be the Chinese avionics package mentioned in the Janes report.

The eventual cockpit description sounds like a F-18 🙂

Confirms a highly open design. He repeated 2006 as the date for the PAF’s first planes. Very ambitious date but it is the one they’ve pushed in all the recent reports so they have better meet it.

Sounds nice but as mentioned already, politics. In the case of how the U.S. does FMS ( foeign military sales ) the annoying thing isn’t always unit cost ( which can be a red herring ) but who and how it is paid for with 2 or 3 different colors of money, and then the cheap 0 interest loans where it applies and the “offsets”. I don’t care if an F-16 costs 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 million. What I care about is how all the money is laundered back and forth to give it the apprearance of a conventional sales deal, where you have a vendor and a buyer. Which just doesn’t seem to be the case.

At some point, the company involved, Boeing, Lockheed. CAC, etc. needs to get paid. The selling nation’s government could make deals, but either they subsidize a sale for political reasons or alow the company making the plane to sell for a profit. In the US’s case, they could often do both depending the need.

The Block 60 deal with UAE is about as close to a vendor/buyer scenario you could come. The Arab Emirates aren’t looking for offsets. The transactions of $80m for plane, weapons and spares are pretty straight forward here.

OTOH, the C/F-18 deals with Canada and Australia are messy ones with lots if offsets. Add money for initial delivery, add license fees for components contracted as parts of offset deals, substract money spent for capital equipment by the buying country to build parts, subtract lower labor cost, etc. Countries with offsets end up with an even more inflated price per plane but they are also paying salaries to their own people in the buy price with the offset deals. The buying nation also hope that investment in the parts lines would result in work for other F-18s sold by the US further in the future.

The JSF would involve negotiating the mother of offset deals 😀 Instead of bilateral negotiations like Dutch F-16 or Canadian CF-18, the JSF is attempting to work out deals on who makes what proportion of what parts on how many planes.

Norway is already complaining that it’s not getting enough of the work.

There is also the margin. Because the Mirage 2000 has sold pretty well and is accepted by a good number of nations, it could afford to charge a little extra and have a healthier profit margin.

The same logic can be applied to the F-16s. You are able to sell Block 52 and 60 at inclusive contract prices ranging from $70 to $80m (this includes weapons, maintenance and spares, I presume.) But I would wager the airframe alone with basic avionics is much much cheaper. The flyaway price for a new F-16 in the 1990s was often quoted at around $20m because of the long production run but from the Poland proposal, the UAE and Taiwan sales, it is never that low.

A $60m M2K is far more profitable than a $60m tranche 2 EuroFighter because the M2K is a matured line and has made profit already. Far more of its $60m price is margin.

The FC-1 would have eek out small margin from its low price and needs volume to make it profitable. Of course, sales is only one of the reasons for the FC-1 and probably the less important one. It is first and foremost a design to allow the Pakistani aircraft industry to cut its teeth on producing a fighter.

Mate I was only saying in general to give it a rest, it wasn’t directed at you persay, as for knowing what’s going on in the world, I’m all for it, but not at the expence of casting aside real issues just to post a few hundred pics of something, one or two are fine, but like in the case of Golden Dragon, hundreds are really not nessecary that’s all

That’s the dumbest, most idiotic thing I ever heard. You dislike people for posting pictures instead of “real” issues? What the flying f*ck are real issues? We’re all enthusiasts here.

I post hundreds of pictures alright and they’re confined to one or two threads (usually marked as picture heavy) that you can avoid if you so chose. And I almost never repeat pictures (unlike the picture in this thread that was already in the J-10 mass production thread.)

As for the naval thread. One, I was one of the earlier particpants in it and I had pumped the thing full of pictures from the very start. It made that thread popular in a goddam aviation forum. Two, the recent HK trip was an major event.

Ja, if you don’t like pictures, stay the f*ck out of my threads and I’ll stay out of yours 😀

Actually the “China’s shroud of secrecy around the J-10” has been removed because “F-10” was mentioned and confirmed OFFICIALLY by general manager Liu of AVIC I !

Wish you can read these Chinese characters (from some official publication):p
    激情进取 实现快速成长 志在超越 跻身强者之林
    刘高倬在中航第一集团公司第五次工作会议上的工作报告(摘要)
Speech of Mr.Liu Gaozhuo on 5th Working Conference of AVICⅠ (Jan.13 2004)
    ……广大参研人员克服巨大困难,圆满完成F-10飞机的试飞试验任务,使我国跻身少数能够研制先进歼击机的国家之列!
    Full article website(chinese)

Hello Maya, I couldn’t find the quote. It seems purposely buried in a mountain of other information.

Even if it was acknowledged by AVIC I in January, there hasn’t been a public photo or story in the 5 months that followed, especially when compared to the FC-1 which is all over the tv, newspapers and magazines.

But still a very good find, Maya! 😀
