That scenario is exactly one of those that was proposed for use of a Cobra. The Cobra is generally a defensive tactic not offensive one (except when used to pull lead for a gun kill and if a Su-30 needs to kill with his gunl and needs a goddam Cobra maneuver to gain lead, he’s already every lost every advantage of being in a Su-30.)

That’s why COBRA is impractical and nearly useless in a real fight as the FC-1 lead test pilot said.

If plane’s at different altitude, you simply point nose up. If you don’t have the energy you do a dive to work up speed.

Someone trying to loop over you simply mean you follow him in the loop or break off with a reverse barrel roll if you don’t have the energy to loop (which is unlikely if you’re behind him in the first place.)

The Lavi is looking good! Have it output in a renderer so we can see the details!

    1. there is no evidence that Mig-33 is the basis of the FC-1. In fact, there is no report of MiG working with any Chinese company post 1960s,

    2. MiG, if and when it goes belly up, would be taken over within Russia, without doubt by Sukhoi,

    3. that is an awful PSed picture that had been floating around the net and this forum for ages,

    4. this is a stupid way to start a flamewar.

An eyewitness on 03’s flight (babelfished).

Before long, the engine thunders by is small and under the big god of thunder and the account the various gods lifts off one after another performs a wheel war pair of ten list ten, ultra seven unfolds wind China. Splendid! Several caused as if all one’s skill, has never seen the so fierce mobility, crawled living rate in a big way, the curve partly passed through it to be small. Suddenly dives (takeoffs 2-3 meter) to pull up the overload to fear is 9g all cannot stop, some movements entered non- conventional as if the boundary, now sees passes through not startled me to be dumfounded, so that felt former ten performances was not worth mentioning. May assert that, in addition 盔 the sight system, ten are now king of the airborne wrestle! More encouraging ultra seven also has continually revealed a chapter of ferocious look. Quick ah! Quick ah!

Looks it’s pulling like 9Gs (to the witness)! 😀

The FTC-2000/JL-9 was well covered publicity-wise during its first flight and earlier at the Zhuhai airshow.

But I can’t seem to find pictures of prototype 03 which flew earlier this month. It’s seemingly buried by the other news items from China.

Anyone who have come across any please post them here.

A few picts that were released after ptype 01.

I haven’t come across a line drawing of the JH-7A but it’s pretty similar to the JH-7. The differences being no wing fences, a slightly difference nose (slopes down more), no framing in the windscreen and double ventral fins instead of the one in the JH-7.

There’s a line drawing of the JH-7 and a three-sided view of the FTC 2000 at Huiting’s great site at

So the whole manuever is predicated on

    1. you being in a bad position to begin (hostile on your tail),

    2. him being surprised when you pull it off,

    3. your own plane being in the energy state and conditions to pull off the maneuver.

The chances are unless your opponent is pretty ill-trained, overconfident or simply stupid and charges in there like a bull, the maneuver seems like pretty limited situationally.

With him passing underneath you, you level your plane and shoot him in the a$$.
