The K-8E (assembled in Egypt)
Didn’t even know that there were Nepali negotiations for Z-9s but it seems there’ve been recent interest in the craft. It probably undercuts the original Dauphin by a good margin.

Cash crunch shoots down Nepal’s China plane deal
Indo-Asian News Service
Kathmandu, February 14, 2006A mounting funds crunch has shot down Nepal’s bid to buy aircraft from China.
After its major arms and aircraft donors India, the US and Britain stopped lethal military aid last year to show concern at King Gyanendra’s power grab, Kathmandu decided to open parleys with Beijing for buying fresh stocks.
In May 2005, the royalist government started talks with China to buy Beijing’s indigenously manufactured MA60 aircraft as well as Z9A helicopters.

I doubt you’ll ever see a Chinese mod here. Ironic to see who’s more open since in one Chinese military forum is open to non-Chinese mods. They have a poster from Finland who’s pro-India/anti-China (he won’t like that especially since I’ve seen him in this forum) and he became a mod.
Soc is one of us. Proof is he is attacked by as many anti-Chinese folks as I’ve been for being “pro” China.
BTW, some of the very best analysts and posters on the Chinese military in the English-based web are not Chinese. We have several of them here, Arthur “Hu Peng” Hubers, first and foremost among them. Rick Kamer who has the most exhaustive list of PLAAF and PLANAF squadrons and air regiments anywhere is another.
The person who probably contributed most to this thread — now in its 9th extension — as well as the PLAN and PLA threads in the army and naval subforums is not Chinese. Hyperwarp is too modest to say he knows as much about the Chinese military as any of us here but he obviously does.
So having a Chinese mod is not entirely critical if those who are mods are fair enough to allow the posters (of any nationality) who are genuinely interested in Chinese aviation to post in threads like this without interruption.
So in that note lets get back to the subjects of news, speculation and pictures instead of mods 🙂
Without doubt the Chinese language forums have the best CG artists on the web and most of those pictures were NOT done for the English-speaking audience.
I’m one of the few who model for the English speaking web but I’m nothing in comparison to the likes of Songbird, Stinger and CJX5537.
You’d think if they liked the Blackhawks so much they put in the effort to make a decent copy of it.
It is ALWAYS far easier to license build than to reverse engineer. They’ve European licenses for the Dauphin and Super Frelon (and the new Z-11 and Medium helo.) There is simply too many licensed projects around to attempt to reverse engineer the Blackhawk.
If it is so wonderful you’d think they’d want to be able to keep them flying, (Like the Iranians have with the F-14s) and perhaps be even able to add new airframes to their own fleet.
The Blackhawks are kept flying, Garry. They’re actually been overused in some of China’s roughest environs like Tibet.
In fact, a Y-8 variant was designed and produced just to cart the Blackhawks around the country.
The Y-12 from Peru, Mauritania, Kenya and Zambia
Vietnam is never ever mentioned as a prospective user of new Chinese equipment (at least since its war with the US) so let’s drop Vietnam as a point of discussion in this thread.
Iraqui H-6
Pakistani A-5 and Albania Z-5
Although no longer on the sales list, the J-6, Q-5, H-5, Z-5 and H-6 were exported:
as collected from Chinese-language newsgroups –
Romanian H-5 and Egyptian J-6
True, lots of J-10 news in the giant PLAAF news and pictures threads.
But in short, just to humor the dude, there are at least 50 J-10s in two squadrons (discounting the CTFE test unit) and the original plane is successful enough that they went and built a two-seater which is also reaching production.
why is it that I remember reading that about k-8 then? need to find the source. As for the simplicity part, I think that it’s quite obvious that it is easier to develop a trainer than a fighter.
If anything, the K-8 was not taken by the PLAAF because of American parts not because of Pakistani involvement. In any case, the US embargo made it a moot point. The K-8 is quickening its entry into both Pakistan and the PLAAF since the Ukrainian AI-25T (and future WS-11) was substituted.
Interesting that in a thread about two non chinese nationals (one french and one taiwanese) wanting to make some money by exporting some american military material to mainland china turns into sferrin accusation time again.
Wen Ho Lee was also Taiwanese. The truth is every weapon sold to Taiwan ends up in China in some way or form.
Anyway, these two guys in the article…did they honestly think they’d be able to just buy a cruise missile? Personally, China’s a nice fat market. I’d say, go ahead and start exporting jet engines and the like.
You hit the nail on the head, Sean. Seriously, what chances are there for a real war between China and the US if it weren’t for Taiwan? And the Taiwanese are the ones spying on nuclear laboratories and exporting weapons to China.
There really is no chance of war between the US and China unless the US is involved in another colonialization drive in Asia.
BTW, the Blackhawks are very good and China prefers Western helos (as in pretty much everything if there were no embargo.) All of China’s helicopter projects — Z-8, Z-9, Z-10, Z-11 — are European-based.
at one point, plaaf didn’t want to purchase K-8, because it had too much component produced in Pakistan.
Not true. PLAAF purchase of the K-8 was stopped by one thing only and that was the US embargo of the original Garrett engine.
But yeah, I think K-8 is probably similar to JF-17, althought Pakistan might have been more involved, due to the simplicity of K-8 compared to JF-17.
The K-8 was actually highly advance for both countries when the project began in the mid 1980s. Both countries were allies of the United States at the time and had access to American parts and American industry advisors. This was the period when the JH-7, the Super 7 and the J-8II Peace Pearl projects were commencing.
The K-8 would have sold even better if the embargo had not taken place.
You probably mean Mali…
You’re right. I do mean Mali.
