Not to mention AdvEOTS, AdvEODAS, upgraded ESM, upgraded AESA radar, CUDA, DIRCM, new functions like cooperative EW, etc.
Don’t forget the cost of developing upgrades for your jet. Compare the cost to develop new ESM functions, a new IRST, AESA radar, etc when it’s spread across 3000+ jets vs a few hundred.
just last week there was an article in my local paper describing the F-35 as the most expensive option by far. And thats not a tabloid.
Just because it’s printed does not make it true, even if it’s not a “tabloid”.
The F-35’s history is chock full of “it’s can’t dogfight”, “it’s can’t climb, turn, etc”, “it will never be below $100 mil”, to “PCA will replace F-35”, etc that all turned out to be false.

PCA is not replacing the F-35. It’s layout and specs are not even known so to say it’s better at dog-fighting than an F-22 is premature.

‘Lethal’ F-35A heading to Red Flag 19-1

Pilots and maintainers from the 388th Fighter Wing are bringing the F-35A and ‘increased lethality’ as they take a lead role in Red Flag 19-1 at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada,From Jan. 26 – Feb. 15, approximately 200 Airmen from Hill AFB, including reservists from the 419th Fighter Wing, will participate in what is known as the Air Force’s premier combat training exercise.
The 388th FW debuted the F-35A Lightning II at Red Flag in 2017 and came away with a 20:1 kill ratio. The jet is even more capable now, pilots say.
“We have an upgraded software suite that has improved our sensor fusion. We’ve got an expanded flying envelope with more maneuverability. We have the ability to employ more weapons, including the 25-mm cannon,” said Lt. Col. Yosef Morris, 4th Fighter Squadron commander. “When you couple those things with the two years we’ve had to improve our tactics, we’re bringing a much more lethal F-35A to this Red Flag and ultimately to the battlefield.”

There is no naked metal on the EOTS. Here is a link to a large pic that shows a little wear of the RAM coating. Ah, now I see the confusion.
He is specifically talking about “at extended ranges” which means that it’s far beyond the “passive ranging” and “laser rangefinder” that modern IRSTs use to establish a weapons track on their own.
Being outside the IRST’s ranging capabilities is a far cry from “There isn’t any IRST deployed that has targeting capability”.
Um, any IRST can target and even FLIR pods can provide limited targeting capabilities.

It was only a 500lb Paveway but you are right… which is why they are putting in SDB2. Even that is too big & expensive IMHO. I would like to see external LZUNI for the CAS & truck-plinker mission. Internal LZUNI would be nice but a new launcher & blast deflector would need to be developed.
On teh bomb drop itself, it came from the front and detonated directly over the bed of the truck.
