    Well that’s about what “$65m for F-35A” translates to, isn’t it?

    Actually, the closest comparison would be the FY2010 F-18s. Their REC was $55.6 mil. So no, nobody is saying that the F-35 is cheaper than the F-18.

    The $65M is the average Unit Recurring Flyaway price reported in FY2010 USD over the lifetime of FRP. They key to achieving that price has more to do with keeping the annual build rates up and less to do with the total build numbers. For example, the biggest increase in F-35 pricing happened when they decided to reduce the annual build rate from 120 to 80 for US jets (a 33% drop).

    Whether I believe it or not is irrelevant, because I do not have access to what the numbers are based on. But just to put it out there, one thing that I have criticized LM for is always putting out the “best” scenario rather than the most “likely” scenario.

    Considering that they are buyers and builders of the Typhoon AND the F-35 (and have access to all the privileged info involved with both programs), they are in a unique position to determine what both costs will be in an apples-to-apple comparison.

    The point of a testbed is precisely about the sensors, and not the environment. It’s about what can be gathered, integrated, and shared in real-time.

    What a sensor detects is not going to magically change when it get’s put into a F-35 vs its performance in a flying testbed. There may be thermal & vibration issues to deal with, but that will not takeaway from the overall performance of the sensor/package as a whole.

    This becomes even less effective when considering AESA radars backed up by networked IRST tracks.

    LOL, the white missiles (bombs?) that were on the wings and seen dropping, were not the green ones (not event he same type) falling through the air or seen impacting.

    .. which is exactly what I’d expect from aircraft which are primarily fighters and don’t necessarily need to designate their targets on every mission. The built-in laser designator of the F-35 points out at its primary task being a striker.. This feature might be also be considered a drawback as it has to drag around the FLIR system all the time.

    Actually, the built in laser has more to do with the F-35 being VLO as an external “as needed” FLIR w/laser would ruin it’s low RCS for a strike mission.

    The F-22 was to have the very same setup (AIRST) but was cut due to cost.
