I would mount a MDG-351 at the forward/starboard corner and another in the aft/port corner. This would provide for 360 coverage against fast attack boats, anti-ship missiles, and aircraft.

In addition to that, I would put some type of VL missile near the forward gun. Something like JAGM with a 20-30km range.

Which is a great heaping load of ********. These planes will be in service for 50+ years, who knows what needs will be like so far in the future?

The KC-X competition will not decide all of the tankers for the next 50 years. If the USAF decides, in the future, that they need more than the KC-46A, they have the KC-Y & KC-Z bids in which to ask for a larger tanker.

Any type of Paveway, up to 1000lb, can be dual racked.

The 500lb Paveway can be carried internally, if that’s what you meant.

The F-35 can (or will likely) use either as the operation dictates.

UAI (Universal Armament Interface) will allow the F-35 to use any weapon that has the appropriate flight profile information created (after separation certification). This can be done without the need of a block upgrade or expensive integration.

We have not felt the gap in capability because we have not needed them yet. Look at the graph which was from one of the earlier contests. Notice the falloff of KC-135E tankers and when the first KC-X tankers comes online.

Now move the KC-X ramp-up to the right due to the delay in the last two contests and you can begin to see the gap in capabilities that has been formed.

Industry has proposed smart “liter-sized” weapons that allows a single F-35 to kill 16 or more targets on a single sortie. But the Pentagon bureaucrats are an unimaginative lot and are still fighting WWII. They refuse to fund any weapon that cannot take out a concrete reinforced building.

They need to provide a 2000 lb class size launching mechanism that can handle high-subsonic launching of these small munitions.

Correct, CF-2 is due to Fly this month and CF-3 before May.

A box-wing tanker may be an easier & more cost effective interim solution till BWB technology matures since the fuselage of the box-wing tanker is based on existing tech.

Well if you want an all-guided bomb load and multiple targets there is not much choice. Besides, the SDB may come with the F-35 contracts. Just because you do not have it now does not mean that you will never have it.

IIRC the Brimstone is a hell of a lot more expensive than SDB. The latest FY2012 budget docs are buying SDBs at $24,000 each.

Why do you think the USA did that? Might it have been because it liked what it saw, & wanted to make sure it got it?

So are you saying that it is ok for the government to change the way it decides a bit right before it makes it’s decision? That opens them up to lawsuits because it’s against the law! This type of activity leads to bribes because there are effectively no rules to follow.

If the USAF truly wanted a large tanker then they should have said so in the latest RFP. Not only did they not do so, many (including Northrop Grumman) claimed that the RFP did the opposite. This issue should be settled.

Here is the KC-X/Y/Z schedule. The KC-10 will be replaced in the KC-Z bid, not KC-Y.
