    “Putting the aircraft’s engines into a highly competitive environment is the only way these complicated technical problems — like screech or any other issue faced by P&W or GE/RR — is going to get fixed in the most aggressive manner possible.”

    So without the F136, P&W would have ignored the screech problem or would not have tried to fix it in a timely manner?

    As to the current news of LM suddenly having solutions & fixes found for the F-35B within 2 weeks of being put on probation, i would suspect there is certainly an aspect of spin doctoring to make light of the negative impact of the 2 yr probation impossed 2 weeks ago.

    So let me get this straight, reporting a problem is valid news but announcing a fix to a problem is spin?

    Did you notice that the fix for the problem was already done before the problem was first reported on, but somehow got left out of the original reporting of the problem? Now who is spinning?

    If enemy fighters are expected in the area, bomb laden F-35s will likely be escorted by all-AAM F-35s. These can carry 4 internal AAMs (and up to 10 external) and will likely go to 6 internal after the Blk5 upgrade.

    Here is a vid that shows in detail the cockpit layout and what happens during a mission. It mentions escort F-35s being the first to engage enemy fighters.

    Those articles are identicle, by the same staff writer.

    The report also calls for the Block 3 mission system software to be tested on a simulated battlefield because existing test ranges are not adequate to test the F-35’s sensor arrays.

    “Open-air testing is constrained by range limitations that are incapable of providing realistic testing of many key capabilities provided by Block 3 aircraft,” the report says.

    I’d love to find out what sytems this covers.

    Let’s take a look at the issues in that article.

    1. Both the Air Force F-35A variant and Marine Corps’ F-35B model experienced “transonic wing roll-off, [and] greater than expected sideslip during medium angle-of-attack testing,”

    Solved in a software update released at the end of 2010.

    2.Pratt and Whitney F-135 engine has encountered an afterburner “screech,”

    Solved and new engines are already being installed in test aircraft.

    3. problems with the aircraft’s helmet-mounted display.

    Since it’s a supplier issue, it is likely a small one or software related. In other words, easily fixed and retrofitted when complete.

    4. “The OBIGGS system fails to inert the fuel tank ullage spaces throughout the combat flight envelopes evaluated,” the report says.

    They just need to upgrade it’s capability and since it’s a FRU, replacing older units with the new ones will not be an issue or showstopper. Heck, it can even be a good training experience for the maintainers.

    Well, looking at that list I see the two biggest issues (screech and handling) already taken care of.

    Do you have any idea the amount of data that would have to be passed through the link and the amount of CPU power needed to process the results?

    The jet motor is not the limiting factor re: the F-35, it’s the inlet. IIRC the inlet only has a 10-20% growth margin for air intake. They have already said that they will not do a “Big Mouth” version of the F-35.

    Not yet finnish testing it.
    Thats why they havent ‘retrofittet it on the F-22’.

    The EODAS hardware and software for the EODAS have been in flying testbeds (QF-4, F-16, BAC-111, CATBIRD) for many years.

    Northrop Grumman announced earlier this year:

    The DAS F-35 software that includes algorithms for all JSF functions was delivered to Lockheed Martin Corporation earlier this year.

    The EODAS hardware & software are essentially done. What is still in dev & testing is the integration of the information provided by EODAS into the rest of the F-35 Mission Systems architecture.

    As to why it’s not in the F-22… Money, or more precisely the lack there of.

    The first 5 LRIP1 and LRIP2 jets have left the factory and are awaiting final checks before their first flights. They have EODAS units installed.

    F-35 will not drop its a2g payload it if its engaged in a a2a fight?

    Wing tanks and A2G munitions hanging on a 4th gen wing greatly affect roll rate, g-limits, etc in an A2A fight.

    An F-35 (in full VLO mode) that carries it’s A2G munitions internally has them very near the center of gravity and center of lift. This greatly limits the adverse effects of having A2G munitions in a A2A fight. Also by having the A2G internal stations mounted directly to the frame, they can be stresses for a full A2G load and cleared for max g load.

    In the F-35 there is no HUD. All the information that normally occupies the HUD is displayed in the F-35’s HMD. That, and video from the EOTS or EODAS if requested by the pilot.

    The EODAS or APG-81 could have gotten a hint something was out there (faint IR detection or intermittent returns from the radar) and the EOTS could confirm the target F-22.

    What is the angle (up & down) at which an AWACS scans? This might be it’s Achilles heel in the form of a plunging AAM attack.

    As far as jamming the inbound AAM, that is what HOJ and especially the JDRADM’s HARM (not to mention IIR seeker) functions are for.

    With all the talk about Anti-AWACS techniques and improvement in AESA technologies… I wonder if/when someone will come up with a stealthy AWACS platform?

    Airborne AWACS will be useless against LO fighters equipped with most likely ramjet-powered A-A missiles.

    Even if we assuming that AWACS can spot a LO fighter at 150 km away, it is stilll too late to react.

    Considering the fact a LO fighter sneaked some 150 km away from a AWACS and throw a 150km+ ranged ramjet A-A missile (with an active seeker) at the AWACS then shut down its radar and return to base.

    Then assuming the AWACS flee to some random direction immediately, then:

    (1)It will only takes ~2 mins for the A-A missile to reach the original location of the AWACS.

    (2)Meanwhile the Boeing-737-like AWACS can at best move some 25-30km away from its original location.

    (3) If the active-seeker installed on the A-A missile can track something with a RCS as big as a Boeing 737 for a range of >25-30 km+, then the AWACS will most likely get shot-down.

    The more likely scenario is the VLO fighter uses his ESM suite to provide launch coordinates for the AAM. The AAM can receive updates throughout it’s flight on the AWACS’ location. The terminal phase can go one of several ways depending on the seeker/INS.

    1. Aim-120D: The missile is guided in to within 5kms due to highly accurate GPS aided INS before going active. The AWACS will have very little warning.

    2. JDRADM: As above but does not need GPS updates due to HARM functions and can also skip active terminal phase and use it’s IIR seeker instead. Almost no warning to AWACS.

    3. Mica-IR like missiles: As above for IIR terminal phase but no GPS updates.

    Do AWACS even have MLD? If not, it will have no idea a plunging AAM is on it’s way till it goes active.
