Skyhawk is a nogo for COIN. Too fast and the short field performance is not good enough.

Well, the real test will begin next year with the QDR and the accelerated 70 plane buy for the DoD.

You, and others have a few misconceptions about procurement.

    1. LM is currently in a Cost Plus contract arrangement. This means they have to open up the books to the JPO (Joint Program Office) in order to account for every penny. So yes, the USAF knows exactly what it costs.

    2. In order to bury the cost of the AC in the equipment costs, there would have to be collusion between the JPO, LM, Congress, and all the suppliers involved. That’s not going to happen.

    3. LM does not “guess” at what the future jets will cost. They, and other builders, have a long history of producing fighter aircraft. That, combined with the DoD’s experience lets them evaluate what the future price will be. Btw,the last two LRIP cycles were 3% and 5% UNDER budget.

    4. If issues come up during SDD, the cost to develop a fix will come from the R&D side, not the production side. The URF will not rise appreciably.

    5. Ignoring the current price structure and future economy of scale changes in order to believe the jet will never get below $100 million is absurd. Using conservative 15% reduction with a 2% inflation rate will put the 2012 purchases at $100 million in then year dollars.

    6. The Israeli jets are quoted to be so high because they want their OWN gear integrated. If they wanted stock F-35As, they could have them for much cheaper.

You can call it a lie if you want but no F-35 will ever cost less than 100mil, not now, not in 5 years and not in 30 years. There might be a lot of talk and marketing about it and LM might shift cost here and there, blow up the price of auxilliary and support equipment in order to make look the flyaway less than in reality but that will be just smoke and mirrors..

there will be tons of promises of future F-35 getting cheaper with increased numbers, that, too, will never happen to any significant degree, just like it never happened with F-16 which was a real performer when it came to numbers. no F-35 will ever cost less than 100mil, ever. And you can call yourself lucky if it stays that low.

That’s all I wanted to say. Call me a fool or not, I personally call a fool everyone who thinks LM will ever deliver stealth fighters at the price of a Charlie Gripen.

Do you mind qualifing the $100 million remark?

What cost are you speaking of?

URF (Unit Recurring Flyaway), Weapon system cost, etc.

    And that might work.

Warfare in general has always been about introducing a weapon, then countermeasure, then improved weapon, then improved countermeasure… and on and on and on…..

    None did claim that

.. then what did you mean by

    Every sensor can be affected!

The ALE-47 pops chaff and flares, it is NOT a DIRCM.

Technology at hand can be used really, when the claimed one for the F-35 is still over a decade away.

The DIRCM for the F-35 has already flown. There are several companies that have working, fast-jet DIRCMs specifically for the F-35.

Block 5 for the F-35 will start official development in 2012, DT&E in 2015, and OT$E in 2017. IOC planned for 2018.

That it must be stronger is out of question, otherwise it would merely fail to meet the requirements. But will it really be THOUSANDS of time more powerful? From where is the power going to come from? BTW DIRCM is also studied for other fast jets, while I haven’t seen a definite plan for integration, such systems are under development in general and are considered for other types as well. If the F-35 will be the first to actually field it remains to be seen.

Yes, DIRCM has been studied for other jets, but the F-35 is the only one who has an ongoing program with a scheduled block upgrade.

As far as the power, the idea was to take a F-35B, remove the lift fan, and insert a generator/solid-stat laser module with a retractable laser turret on the top and bottom.

Who cares about 2002 dollars in 2020? Were these aircraft payed in 2002? Certainly not!

Well, it’s called a benchmark and is a standard in any long term program. You do understand inflation in procurement cycles, yes? But, if you want “then year dollars”, then the stated average has been ~$83 million.

But isn’t that dangerous? Just imagine a manufacturer of IR seekers incorporating laser-guidance into their product. It already exists for various A2G missiles.

Or is DIRCM actually destroying the IR sensors as in making them blind permanently by “illuminating” them for say 3 seconds and then turning off?

Laser guidance shines the laser on the target and the seeker homes in on on the dot that is reflected. This is a great deal different from shining a laser in the seeker.

Think of it this way, it is like trying to walk in the dark while shining a light in your eyes.

    DIRCM Overview

    .

Here is a YOUTUBE vid of a DIRCM test that shows it from the perspective of the seeker.
    .

Here is what happens to the missile as it breaks track.

I am pleasantly surprised that our local F-35 fan club finally quite the $58mil quote. I agree that it is bad news but I don;t think it really is a news. That the F-35 will cost much more than that has been pretty obvious for some time already.

If course it costs more than $58 today, actually it is at $133 million today. Will the F-35 eventually get to $58 million (in 2008 dollars), yes.

According to the DoD the average cost, in 2002 dollars over the program lifetime, for a F-35A will be in the “upper $40 millions”. If the F-35 follows a conservative reduction plan of 15% per year (last year was 19%), 2011 will be at $113 and 2012 will be at $96 million.

    Every sensor can be affected!

The DIRCM cannot affect a radar based missile. The way that it affects an IR missile is to blind the sensor. Radar CANNOT be blinded by a DIRCM unit.

Now, the conceptual , lift-bay laser for the F-35 is another beast altogether as it would be THOUSANDS of times more powerful than a DIRCM.

    Already thaught of.

That is not what he asked. The laser that some are thinking of is THOUSANDS of times more powerful than a DIRCM.

Btw, DIRCM is scheduled for the F-35 in Block 5. This will also be the first time a DIRCM is used on a production Fast-Jet. Notice I did not say helicopter or cargo jet.

BlauerMax – a DIRCM cannot affect a radar seeker, just an IR one.

Ok, so what will this mean to US procurements during the years 2012-2016 then? Afaik they planned to order 548 aircraft during those years. Now with the dead consortium buy shouldn’t the price go up for the US procurements too? Without a significant budget increase I cannot see them ordering 548 F-35 there.

The original costs and schedules were calculated without the consortium buy, so no change. The consortium buy was suggested as a way to stabilize the production line and reduce prices for the partner nations.

We may still see some mini-consortium buys.
